I make it a point to collect all models of the Ferrari GTE made. I have quite a collection, including Provence Moulage, Dinky, Soilido, Verem, Bandai, Bang, Politoys, Esdo, BBR, Glamour, and AMR. The last one was probably the most expensive to acquire, $280 via Ebay.
Now...there is a 1/18 version from an Italian firm, but they seem to be asking 630 Euros. It seems silly....I know that people pay this much for Pocher models, but....While the amount if of course relative, I am facing an ethical dimemma here...I can buy a real running car for that !

You have the 1:1 scale, why do you really need anything else?

I've found with Ferrari, there are just so many models and other nick-nacks, that you are better off just getting the car. It will be cheaper and take up less space in the long run.

That said, anyone have the red/tan AMR Mondial 8...

Jay Leno said the reason he didn't like Ferraris was you had to buy all the books and accessories and he didn't have enough room for it all...

While not an 8, I do have an MR 47A Mondial 3.2 in dk blue / tan ser. #145 that I paid 2,100 Austrian Schillings for in 1999 - shown here with a 1/12 Revell 250 GTO and an Enzo Ferrari signed card. I seem to prove Jay Leno's point....

I agree with Leno and you. If you have a Ferrari, you have to be a Ferrari fanatic, buying books, scale models, watches, clothes... ALL.
I don't have a 1/1 Ferrari, only 1/18, but you only have to watch this F-Chat to see how fanatic we are. And, if you're a fanatic, you're ready to pay for it.
The most expensive item that i bought from Ferrari was a Nino Farina Ferrari 555 Supersqualo in 1/18 scale. I paid 370 € (485 USD) for it, and i won't pay this much again... i'm not so crazy....

Russ.... I have the same 250GTO 1/12 model, it was given to me by an uncle who was a national sales director for Revell... My question for you is, what's the quality of the paintwork? The different panels of mine have slightly varying shades of yellow paint, but I've always attributed the imperfection to the notion that it was a preproduction sample, like so many others that he has in his collection. Someday I'll disassemble it, and repaint, but I am just curious about the quality of the paint of yours. I've seen other 1/12 Revell 250GTO's, but they were all a Dark Blue.

The question of what you are willing to pay for a model is exclusively up to you, unless you need to justify something to someone else (a budget-guarding wife perhaps).

Having said that: sometimes I wonder whether or not it is all worth it. Fact is that a model doesn´t really serve some justified function. You put it down just to look at it, and thats it. But on the other hand, what would be wrong with that? My girlfriend is happy buying shoes and clothing. Of course, stuff like that serves a logical purpose, but the clothes she bought 5 years ago, have lost their purpose since she doesn´t wear it anymore, where as the models I bought 10 years ago, are still right here in my glass cabinet, sometimes even growing in value over the years (allthough I buy to own, not to sell).

Many things do not serve a justified function. Does anyone really need a Ferrari. For much less money you can buy a car that will get you where you need to be.

As far as models surving a purpose they do when it comes to design studios. Obviuosly thats not what we are talking about here.

Some models cars are a form of art. The most expensive model I have personally sold was a custom hand built for $4000. And thats not even scratching the surface as there are several well known builders who sell models in the $30,000 range. They don't sell many, but these are true works of art just as functional as a painting on the wall. People like looking at things in miniature.

We all love to collect material things, fuctional or not. If it gives you pleasure to own and look at it, thats its function. Price is relative.

It may not be rational but its true.

I'm pretty fanatical, but have reached some sort of saturation point. I have like 100 1/18 Ferraris and will still buy some occasional one, but have given up on ever owning any 1/18 there is. There is just no end to it. But there is a limited amount of space in my apartment and quite frankly the cars I already have are not really displayed the best due to lack of space. Maybe something to consider.

I bought mine at a hobby store in Kaiserslautern, Germany in 1998, I think for about $70 brand new. For what it is, the fit, colors and quality are pretty good. All of the colors seem to have been done at the same time.

The next **really** expensive Ferrari model I plan to buy will be the CMC 1/18 250 GT SWB when it is released later this year.

Thanks for the perspective. Perhaps Ed put it best: to think of it as a work of art.
I wander what the bonus structure will be like this quarter at work....

on a side note - given your company name and location, I think I bought a Kyosho model from in December on ebay... do you sell on ebay? I think it was you...

I feel actually guilty (and stupid) now to have all these great models and no really cool way to present them. I was recently invited to a really wealthy guy's home. He is a collector of antique plates. Very unique, very rare, very expensive and to me at least very boring. But he had that great custom made glass cabinet wall with halogen lights and all and while he proudly showed me his collection I was imagining how cool my models would look in there...
    :)

So maybe for now I should rather focus on a good display case before getting more cars.

I know the car. I offered what they are now asking for it once. A year ago. They said no. I no longer even look at what they have on the lot.

    Hello Roy,
I sell on ebay all the time, been doing it since 1998. My ebay name is ed427vette. I don't remember selling any Kyosho models. I don't think it was me. I aminly sell resin sports car kits in 24th, 12th or 43rd scale. However I just got hold of hundreds of 1/64 scale Winross trucks and some variuos Franklin Mint and Danbury mint diecast models. The FM and DM models are really nice pieces.

Couldn't agree more - I seem to have everything except a Ferrari. The Cartier chronograph (2 actually), pens, videos, books (more than 400) and models. This is my most expensive (£3400 = c. $6000) but it is superb and BIG. For sale at the moment for £2400 (c. $4500) - see Ferrariads

It adds up real quick, doesn't it. As long as you enjoy what you have its money well spent.

I agree. Mine are in my workout room and I take a look at them every day (that's not to say I work out every day...). I don't regret any single purchase. As a matter of fact, the more time passes the happier I get over older purchases as some of those cars are no longer available. Not from an investment perspective, but just knowing that I grabbed an opportunity while it was there. Especially true for the F1 cars.

Welcome to the board and don't despair over a Bburago. Consider them a challenge: The older Bburagos are easy to take apart, they have screws in the bottom. Once disassembled you can paint the interior and the eninge parts with enamel paint and then reassemble. This way I enhanced e.g. my 288 GTO to make it more accurate.

thanx ill try that. actually have a whole host of FERRARI models, but will first try it on my 1:18 yellow F-40,it was actually delivered with one mis-fitting left door...but the supplier thought it to be too minor a fault to be replaced!!!!!
