If selling to a private party locally, what documentation other than the private-party Bill of Sale we've put together does he have to carry prior to getting document registered with DMV.

In other words, in the next few days, he won't have a license plate or registration, and so in the event somebody stops him, does the Bill of Sale suffice with an explanation that he is going to get the car registered?

With a dealer, temp plates and documentation usually satisfy the near-term requirements.

    Thoughts appreciated.

NJ - You register the vehicle with the dealer & he gives you temp. certification. Your insurance: call them. they cover from one vehicle to the next for a few days.

To a private seller: technically unless he gets it registered at the DMV with the Bill of Sale (and pays sales tax), and until, he can't drive it. He also needs to call his insurance company to tell them to insure it. Assuming you didn't cancel the registration & insurance, technically you could "lend him" the car on your credentials (you are liable) or you could drive it to the destination, collect the plates & leave.

Don't want to do that. His car, his issue.

He'll have his insurance in effect, so that point is covered.

Guess what I'm hearing is that he should get the car registered with the DMV tomorrow itself...or curry a favor from a dealer and get temp plates / documentation.

I'm not sure of the specifics with NY, but if you've sold him the car you should get your plates back -- and he cannot drive the car until he's registered it.

Dealers have the ability to issue temp tags, but private parties do not.

Here's some info from near the bottom of the page:

    Private-Party Paperwork

    Selling Your Car
When it's time to part ways with your vehicle, you can have a dealer sell it, trade it in for another car (either to a dealer or a private party), or simply sell it to a private party.

If you sell it to a private individual, provide the following documents to the new owner:

    Proof of ownership.
Odometer and damage disclosure statement (if not on the back of the title, use Form MV-103).
Proof of purchase price or gift.
The original document from the lienholder that proves the lien is satisfied, if applicable.

Take the license plates off the car and remove the registration sticker from the windshield so you're not held liable for any parking or traffic tickets the new owner gets.

The new owner is responsible for getting a new title, a new registration, and new plates at the DMV. You are responsible for surrendering your plates to the DMV or transferring them to another vehicle before your insurance lapses, otherwise the DMV may suspend your driver license.

    Good luck...

    It's pretty simple for him.

He pays you money for the car and gets the title from you and other proof of sale (to include price and millage). He calls insurance and adds the car to his policy. Next he goes with those in the morning to DMV and registers the car right away. There is no need to wait for the new insurance cards - all they need at DMV is a policy number. Then he comes to you to pickup the car with his new plates. That's all.

    For you it's even simpler.

As soon as you sell the car and release the title, you go to DMV and surrender the plates. Then you call your insurance and ask them to take the car off your policy. That's all. In a meantime, make sure the car is parked on a private property - not local street (even enclosed neighborhood). The car can be towed away by cops.
