Whats good? One of my friends is a private practice MD who has his own family practice medical clinic. He is looking to upgrade a little bit or do anything to make a little more money. Are there any doctors on here that have any experience in this or any advice tips for running private practices? Thanks

As a freelance gynecologist, I believe that opening up additional offices will do the trick.

    Short answer--multiple offices bad.

I have experience with this--in general, unless one or more of the following conditions is met, multiple offices don't typically generate a larger take home revenue stream.

    1) Doc is not fully booked at one office.
    2) Doc recruits patients at a "second office" that can return when no doc present to generate revenue (an example is patients who return again and again for allergy shots).
    3) Doc can adjuster payor mix (selectively see more patients who have better paying insurance).
    4) Something allows excellent economies of scale (not typically true in medical practices).
    5) Doc does a unique and highly renumerative procedure that is difficult to recruit patients for; but by being in mulitple geograhic areas doc can recruit more patients for said procedure.

General practice is a tough gig. Many cosmetic procedures (for example, hair removal laser) that are potentially available are also available in spas, salons, the mall etc.

Private practice is being squeezed hard by feds and 3rd party payors. No real income generating shtick left, as this country is being herded towards 'universal' healthcare, i.e. socialized medicine, and socialism in general.
Real money is made outside of medicine.;)

    One word:

    Physician extender.

    OK, maybe two words.

And I don't mean THAT kind of extender; I mean PA or Nurse Practitioner.
