'86 328 - Noticed a burning oil smell and found that oil is dripping onto the top of the exhaust pipe below where the dipstick disappears at the front, passenger side of the engine. The engine oil level is a little low after never using a drop, so it appears to be leaking. The transmission level is unchanged. Looking up from below the car, the exhaust pipe and heat shield obscure any view and a little oil trail is making its way down the side of the shield. Nothing can be seen or felt from above. Any advice or weak areas to target in that area? Thanks for the thoughts...

Easy thing to try is seeing if any of the valve cover nuts are loose.

    Cam cover gasket is bad.

I'm actually relieved that apparently there isn't some secret oil supply hose back there that is impossible to get to. Can the cam cover gasket be replaced without taking off the engine cover? I am still having nightmares about realigning it.

And, I will check the nuts - if I can reach them, that is.

Yes pretty simple job but still a little tight on space.
