Did anyone here get their iPhone 4 to work as an iPod to play music when connected to the connector in their California? Any trick or advice for this?

My iPhone 4 synchronizes for telephone service with bluetooth, albeit not that easily the first time, now no problem, but I wish it had bluetooth audio streaming because I can't get it to work as an iPod to play music while attached to the connector in the glove box. It charges it fine but when I try to play music in iPod mode it just says "Please wait, Initializing comm..." When I plug in an old iPod shuffle works right away though.

BTW, got tired of trying to get it to work so I paid $90 for a one year subscription to satellite radio so when I'm up in the mountains and no tunes, I got something to listen too. Yes yes yes I know, listen to the engine, well, nice to have some good tunes to push you into complete driving maniac mode. ;-)

FYI satellite fades in an out frequently, but then when no other choice...

This may not be the solution you're asking for, but personally I have an iPod nano in all my cars that can play iPods. They never leave the car; I have one in my Cayman and one in my BMW. So if those work for you, why not use that solution? Just leave it plugged in in your Cali.

And I understand playing music in your California, I do in my 550.

Now my vintage Ferrari, that is a different story....

Just get a cheap iPod dedicated solely to music and leave it in the Cali. It is a pia plugging and unplugging, particularly with the ridiculously short wire.

My Sirius fades out once in a while in my 2010, but the first year it really was solid making me think the satellite power is down, but maybe I am dreaming too.

And I too have an iPod Nano in the glove box. Keep the phone in your pocket. Fortunately the iPod connector charges the iPod so you never have to remove it other than to load new music. My Mercedes S550 does not charge it so it works a few days then I have to charge it separately, a pain. Fortunately I seldom drive the S550 since getting the California.

Is there anyone else? Although she does seem to have a new boyfriend every year ... something is amuck there. Guess I will stay with my wife.

I have an iPhone 4 and the Bluetooth connection is awful. I am not a hater and love the car, but the voice recognition idea is ridiculous in a car where the goal is to leave the top down as often as possible.
Maybe the right answer is that when I drive the car, it is my alone time and no one can reach me.
BTW, I put all of my iTune songs on a USB and downloaded them to the HDD. Takes forever and the controls are not as good as the iPod, but seems to be working out.

You could just switch the ipods from your Merc to Cali, that way you wouldn't need to charge it separately at home.

Not sure, but I think there r software issues and only iPods will work. Phones and I pads not compatable. Some older iPods not consistent causing "initiating com" display. Hard drive is nice but u need a lifetime to load stuff. Hopefully faster with newer models. Sat radio has worked great 4 me. Got the traffic option which reroutes u to the quickest path. A nice feature in so cal.

Today I spoke with someone in Ferrari's Aftersales Department. As of now, the California system is not completely compatible with the iPhone 4, which basically means it is like a box of chocolates - you never know what is inside. It is estimated that a software upgrade for the iPhone 4 will be available in a couple of months, just in time for the iPhone 5.
