Looking for a few ideas of inspiration in designing a product manual. Got any favorite references out there?

I don't mean to jump right in and be the voice of smack, but I have two bad examples.

A couple of weeks ago, I took a test drive in the new Chevrolet Malibu to Mid-Ohio and back. That manual is the worst in the business.

With my new Canon Rebel XSi, well, its manual is an example of the traditional Japanese product manual aesthetic.

In my case, I suspect that it's a case of me not recalling the good ones.

    =)

I'm reworking a manual for a network appliance developed for the IT field. I'm into cutting back words, visualization and making it more usable. I've been through too many meetings discussing how Dell's manuals were going to be done. That was years ago, and it would give me heartburn. Not much has changed since!

WARNING: Don't take this too seriously. :D

Have you tried looking at children's manual, check out some of the LEGO things, Honestly, I grew up on LEGO's so, I still remember those manuals. It may sound silly, because your looking for something in the IT field.

That's actually not a bad idea. I think I have some of those manuals ingrained into my head.
