Have been flying with the Lowrance AvMap - really good for straight VFR stuff where you don't need the Wx capability of the Garmin. And for $600, it's a heck of a lot cheaper. What has worked out in my plane well with the canopy is the larger screen works great in bright sunlight. While not quite as intuitive as the Garmin, it is easy to learn the basics, and has a very good aquisition time.
It comes with an external active antenna, so that probably helps
    Also comes with yoke mount.

Summary: for straightforward VFR stuff it is a great deal for the $600 price, especially if you need a larger screen that is bright sunlight capable.

    Hey SNJ5,

Thought I would wait a few months before asking this question so you would have more time to use your new GPS....I currently have a Garmin III Pilot but I am thinking of upgrading. All of my fun flying is low and slow so I don't require much. My plane has an open cockpit so with the darkness and the vibrations the larger screen would be easier to see than with the III Pilot, hence the wanting to upgrade...I am wondering if you have used the Lowrance on battery only and how long it lasts as I don't have an electrical system and have heard that the battery only operation time is a drawback for the 2000c. I have been thinking of buying the Garmin 196 (would love the 296 or newer for the color screen but not necessary) but it looks like for around the same price as a gray scale 196 I can get the Lowrance. I wouldn't be using it for any serious navigation, just "get pointed in the correct general direction" type stuff....if you have any other thoughts comparing the two, let me know.
    Thanks....

Not sure about internal power as I use ship's power. It comes with an external antenna, but works well on the internal antenna.

It is GREAT in direct sunlight (I have a canopy) with the big screen bein better than my 396 for these old eyes. For bumming around, it is very good with quick aquisition times.

Will try to get a photo.

    Thanks SNJ5,

I ended up buying some RAM mount pieces and making a mount that I think will work out in mounting my oooold Garmin Pilot III. I talked with Garmin and told them I haven't used the thing in over 10 years, so they sent me a free cable to update the software and maps etc...soooo, guess I will hold onto the pilot III a while longer....Since all my fun flying is low and slow, if I need anything fancy to back up what I already use (reading water towers, highway signs etc....) then I will look into upgrading then.....Take care...
