Very unexpected. Rest in Peace Sir Watkins, I salute you; you've done a great deal for Formula 1 and it's drivers and motorsport.

Everyone who's stepped into a race car in the past few decades owes this man a huge amount of gratitude. What an amazing life he had.

He was key to making F1 safer for drivers and spectators. His book, "Life at the Limit: Triumph and Tragedy in Formula One" is a great read for any fan! RIP

    Too bad.

He changed the entire way F1 rescue and medical aid is being applied.

And he saved Mika Hakkinen's life.

This is not how I wanted to celebrate my 3000th post but it is fitting that it be on a special subject. Professor Sidney Watkins was always a great hero of mine and I had the greatest respect for the contribution he made to motor racing. Back in 1998 I spotted him walking the track in Montreal and asked him to pose for this photo. I was racing in the Formula Ford support race and he wished me luck which was a very special gesture to receive.

The following year I had a chance to meet him on 'the other side of the wall' and I kindly asked him to sign my photo. The sharpness of his intellect amazed me as he instantly chose to sign his name on the wall commenting that it would look like graffiti. To this day I treasure this photo and it is one of my favorite pictures.

Between fishing trips with Ayrton I'm sure he'll have time for Gilles who famously wished to never have to see him. Rest in peace Prof your kind is not likely to grace us for some time.
