Anonymity on the internet is a double edge sword. I see the value for high profile people or people that like to their info private. But it also breeds too many people that start BS with people and act like a-holes because they think they are anonymous. So in some ways it helps bring out the bad side of people.

I like to know who I'm talking to, ie. more personal. However, I don't find it as essential for general posting. If someone wants to stay private they can, but if PM's are being exchanged, then it's nice to share the info if you haven't already.

I like having these profiles. It makes it more of a community than just a webboard.

When I first came to this board, I was given a very warm welcome, though I did fill out my profile from the start. I do not engage in personal attacks and I have no reason not to fill out my profile, and I think everyone should. I have noticed in the last year or so most of the new members do not bother to fill out their profiles. I know most of the people in my area, and though I may never meet many of you, I'd like to at least know something about you.

So how do the newcomers get acquainted with the old guard? Old members having no profile perpetuates an environment that is not particularly welcoming to newcomers.

In my case, I have met many of the members at local gatherings and I have learned a lot of other stuff about members just by reading posts and paying attention.
I know a lot about some members that I have never met, just by reading their posts.
IMO it's not as important for the new members to be able to know about the old members as it is for the old members to know about the new members. In due time, the new members will know plenty about the older members. Again, JMO.

For someone that has 20-30 million dollars worth of cars and is well know to many members, I don't don't expect them to have a profile.

You should fill out your profile, FerrariChat is a community, and we like to know who are members are.

Its one thing if you dont want people knowing everything about you like birthdates, occupation's, etc. but at least fill out some of the options. I cant stand it when a new member registers and posts a question, then when you go and look at his/her profile you get nothing, or a bunch of N/A's.

Is it that hard just to type in a few things about yourself?

I think filling the profile is a basic form of courtesy. If for whatever reason someone does not want to do it, at the end of the day it is their problem.

I agree that some minimum information should be required and this can be done without divulging any personal information.

For example there is a recent post about the posters F-Car buying experience at a "local dealer". Since the posters profile is completely unfilled, the reader can get absolutely no idea what "local" means. At least country and state (or province) of residence should be required.

I can count on 2 hands the number of high profile billionaires that have been or were on this site...Remember when Steve Jobs was recovering from cancer? He was on the site every day, its nice to have a place where you can just be "one of the guys" and not have some looking to exploit you in one way or another. Plus there are alot of crazy stalkers on earth that can/will cause trouble for no reason at all....If someone is anonymous but cordial its all good, if they come her starting trouble then ban them.....Simple as that!

I agree it should be required to fill out the info. I will not answer a question of a poster that has no profile, not that my answers are all that frequent, helpful or important. Its a courteous issue with me. Its like talking to a wall. Regards, Vern

Plus, you have a kewl Maranello :)
I used to have more in my profile, but security concerns made me change it. Lots of nutballs on earth, and high-end car boards are obvious target-rich environments. Poseurs are another matter, as are trolls.

Agree...I've cut my info to the basics: First name, city, (former) occupation, model name and pics of my Ferrari w/o the license plates showing...too many predators out there, legal and illegal.

How times have changed; the Steve Jobs I worked for in the '80's would never have spent 5 minutes talking about cars, let alone surfing a Ferrari chat forum!

Just noticed that a new poster (9-10-05 signup, 4 posts) asked the "When do you decide you can afford a Ferrari" question.. His profile was also filled in fully.

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/member.php?u=23881

100% helpful answers. Always hard to prove a generality, but it seems to support the argument that if you make yourself known and present your question coherently everyone's polite and helfpul.
