Quick question ... Recently lost a black key fob ... I have a red one a black one and the pin ... I tried entering the pin manually to disable the alarm following the documentation posted on the forum and it worked perfectly car started with no remote ! So my question is can I buy a new black fob off eBay and and program the alarm ecu to read the new fob following the instructions provided here in the forum.... Or do I need to purchase a matching set of 3 from ferrari ??

    Thanks for your help

    Tim

Tim- No, you cannot buy one and program the ECU to accept it. The PIN in your current red fob is already in the Alarm ECU. Once that PIN is in the ECU, it cannot be used again to reprogram the ECU to accept new fobs. If you tried, everything would work normally and the LED would flash slowly while it waited patiently for you to push a red fob's, with a new PIN, button. Pressing the one you have with the current PIN will do nothing, and the LED will not speed up its flashing like it does with a new PIN.

You can clone your red or black fob, so you still have a back-up. At this point, there is no difference between your red and black fob except the color of the plastic, since the red fob's PIN cannot be reused. So if you clone one, clone the red one and then use your original black for your primary fob. That way the rolling codes (like a garage door opener) will not get out of synch on your red and its clone.

Since you have your PIN, another option is to buy a new matched set of three fobs with new PIN. After programming the Alarm ECU to accept them, you can then sell your old fobs, which bring a pretty good price.

    Hey Terry... Let me ask:

I have three fobs. I have been grabbing one, then the other on the next drive, then the other when I go out after that. Essentially I use a different fob each drive. Am I in fear of "getting out of synch" in your opinion? I have never even given a second thought to the rolling code...

Michael- No, if you have an original matched set of three, they each have their own ID in the Alarm ECU and each has its own sequence of rolling codes. So you can alternate fobs all the time.

The only time there is a problem is with a cloned fob, which has the same ID as the original fob and the same rolling code sequence. Then you have to press the clone (or original fob if using the clone) until the Alarm ECU sees a rolling code for that ID that it has not seen before. There are something like 64,000 possible rolling codes from each fob before it would repeat.

Tim- No, one in the US Midwest and one in southern France, and both are completely trustworthy.

Unlucky on losing one. I have mailed dozens to France using normal mail and none have been lost. Probably just pointed the fickle finger of fate at myself with that sentence.

PM Gobble (Midwest) or Eric355 (S France) for contact information.

Its nerve wracking to send the only working fob in the mail. Insure it for what Ferrari will charge you for the new 3 fobs, that way if it gets lost you have insurance for the replacement.

I stopped by Ferrari of Houston this weekend. They told me the charge for three new fobs for my 355 would be around $480.

I sent my one and only fob to Gobble and he got it back to me same week. I sent it next day with next day return and he did a great job. I'll vouch for him!
