The paint on my 360 Spider's air plenum got bad enough to the point where I couldn't look at it anymore, and as some of you know, my car is undriveable at the moment so I took the matter into my own hands to get them repainted... by myself.

I know there's some other threads on here about the topic, but I may be the first person dumb enough to paint the ENTIRE part while not bothering taking them out of the car so I don't have to overnight new gaskets because I know mine have probably shrunk. :)

I have a show that the car is entered in this weekend, so it must be done and there's no time to wait for some $200 paper cut-outs.

As you can see, I've burned hours of my life covering the entire engine bay and just about half the car from my dire paranoia of overspray, which is exactly why my self-given project name includes the word "overkill," which it is. It's just overkill. But for good reason. ;)

Too humid tonight to paint the plenum, but I've got my handy-dandy VHT Red Wrinkle paint ready to go and the humidity is set to drop a lot tomorrow. Very nervous about the outcome and the shortage of curing time, but the instructions on the bottle say 48 hours which can be accelerated by "putting the part in the oven at 200° for 1 hour," but I've decided that putting the entire car in my conventional oven isn't an option.

I plan on sanding the paint off of the Ferrari logo after the paint dries, but I'm not sure if I should sand it the old fashioned way, the way of a sanding block, or the good 'ole Dremel tool (too scared to act on the latter). Any suggestions?

Will update once the process is over. if you don't hear from me within 24 hours, something has gone horribly wrong and the car has gone up in a massive inferno, which I'm relatively optimistic won't be the case. :)

On my former 355, I used the same VHT red wrinkle paint and I sanded the paint off the high areas with sandpaper and a sanding block. The paint is pretty tough to sand, so be patient.

    Good luck!

Go for it Nick. Block sanding, vacuum and you are done.

Looks like your work really paid off Ron! That came out great. Hopefully mine will come out just as well!

Finally getting to it! Won't bother me so much at cars and coffee anymore when people take close-ups of the plenums! Haha. :D

Nick, I did something similar (not to the same extent as you, but without taking the plenum off the car). Good luck with painting and please post pics!

Thanks! And yeah, I saw your thread. I could have done something like that just for now but I'm taking it to a show this weekend and that seems to be the main place where people look on the car. :)

    Thanks Michael! :D

The paper and tape placement looks kinda tacky, but it'll work, nonetheless lol

Haha, wow I didn't even think of that! You're right! And I'm just about as nervous as the patient would be just because I'm about to spray paint all over the engine bay of my car. :)

Alright, I've just painted the plenum. :D

Color looks GREAT! I followed all of the instructions word for word, so I hope they come out good.

I could not work like this, why did you not remove the covers and do them properly?

Didn't have time to order $200 gaskets. It's temporary. When winter comes along, they'll be taken off and sent off to a professional.

Looks great! I especially love that black center cover in the middle of the plenum. May do that over the winter. :)

    Hello,

First...Great JOB on the papering. In high school and college that was my job in a body shop.

Second...Do you think I can buy a can of that spray, spray some on a piece of plastic outside the garage then while still wet pick some up on a tiny paint brush and do a touch up??

I have a few spots that are buggin' me!!!

    Thank you for your advice.

Yes I think you could definitely do that. The paint is very thick and stays wet for a long time so that wouldn't be a problem. :)
