HA! I guess you'll need to accidentally redo the interior now! Looking good.

You going to be at T Rutland's this weekend? Why don't you roll the BB 'SL' into the parking lot? Bet you get more eyeballs than anyone there!

Far as your kudo's to FoA, I have found those folks to be VERY accomodating, helpful, responsive.

That Black BBQ Boxer probably needs a mildly dented tail end to go with it! Hope the project is going well.

The rare BBQ option way before the 458 had it.

I have been thinking about changing the BBi mirrors to the Vitaloni California mirrors used on the Carb Boxer. Seems in theme with the superleggera theme as they must weigh less and I will have to say personally I prefer the looks of the earlier mirrors. There was an article in Forza awhile back where a guy put some Miata mirrors on his boxer. Not really to my taste but I like the out of box thinking.

What you guys think? Stock BBi, Carb, or some other aftermarket mirrors?

Ill buy your OEM mirrors if you chose to sell them. I prefer the look of the original mirror.

You have first dibs on them if I decide to go with something else.

BTW, I saw your post about the high performance crown and pinion. Those parts are for this project. I personally can't wait to get this car back on the road to see how it performs with the 3.69:1 rear axle ratio. I like your quote of "substantial increase in acceleration in all gears". The guys also have some nice engine upgrades planned as well. We will let the cat out of the bag later on that one.

A bit off topic and you may have referenced this before, but is that a speaker box below 'b' pillar, drivers side interior? If so, probably won't make it in the weight reduction program!

Far as mirrors, the Vitalonis definitely fit the superleggera theme better.

You are correct, those are speaker boxes and they have already been removed. While I still like to have a radio in the car those boxes had to go. I guess it was an 80s thing to have big speakers in a car.

Regarding the mirrors I haven't seen a better option than either the original mirrors or the Californias from a Carb car. On the weight reduction theme, I actually wouldn't mind having manual windows as having those heavy window motors in the door doesn't really make any sense to me.

After looking at quite a few options I decided to stay with the stock mirrors. I have the opportunity to remove and fill in where the front parking lights are mounted. Carb cars didn't have them and have a much smoother appearance (See Forza mag issue with the three Boxers). I have seen a BBi with them removed and they look fine. What do you guys think? Would you remove them and change the originality of the car or just save the time and effort for something else?

    Hope I'm reading this right.

    1. Keep mirrors as original to car. Good move.
    2. Ditch SIDE parking lights in favor of Euro units.
    3. Keep original front parking lamps. That's just me. I DO agree the looks are 'better' sans lights, but this could be a regrettable move in the future.

I attempt to keep tabs on your car through FoA on occasion. They said its getting painted (they think). Gonna be fantastic.

    1. Correct, stick with the original mirrors.
    2. My Boxer never had USA side lights, it was always in EURO trim.
    3. I tend to agree with you in keeping the car original.

The Boxer is over at the paint shop. I almost completely disassembled the car so I figure it was either now or never. The paint was a strong 3 maybe a 2- but with the car in an amazing number of pieces I couldn't stop myself.

the air boxes weigh nothing... the clamshell is very heavy. the exhaust system super heavy.

    Good day,

I can't speak for the BBi and it should be very similar to the BB which I do know, the rear clam is very light as it is made from Aluminum (skin) and steel structure. One man can easily lift it... although two are needed to remove it from the car, as it is somewhat balky.

    Cheers,

    Sam

Agreed on that. I have intimate first hand experience with the clamshell as I just hung one on the wall as garage art. Did it alone and though a strain, was nowhere near as heavy as one might assume 1/3 of a car exterior would be. Pretty amazing.

I do not have exact weights but I would agree with your order. The airboxes are a couple of lbs, the rear clamshell is easily picked up by one man, my guess would be about 40-50 lbs as I have moved plenty of 50 lb bags of media and that is heavier. The exhaust system is actually heavier than the rear clamshell or at least the one on my car was. I ordered an aftermarket stainless exhaust that weighed quite a bit less. As the car is reassembled I will try and get some of the parts weighed so we have exact figures.

You make me nervous with that clamshell on the wall and the Boxer right underneath it. The guys in CA would never be so brave.

Here is the latest picture of the project. The main shell is now painted in red and within the next couple of weeks parts should start to go back on the car. Hopefully we will see a lot of regular updates to this thread in 2012.

Taking a Boxer this far apart is not for the faint of heart. Note to future Boxer restorations, beware.

Note to future Boxer restorations: the reward of a project beautifully done. Great going!

The Boxer is a special, special car. Was watching a show called 'One of a Kind' the other night, and it struck me how the racing P3/P4s (the subject of the show) heralded the way for the Boxer.

The beautiful lines, curves, mid mounted 12, all stuck into a basically uncompromising car. I'm sure they're a pain to restore, but man what a masterpiece.

    Watching Newman work on #19271........yea.

The purchase price was only half of it, maybe less.
