Saw the car today and noticed that the removable rear wheel arch covers are missing on both sides ( allows easier access to engine bay ) . They dont look too difficult to manufacture but are these available to buy anywhere . Or does anyone have a set to sell ?? thanks
Picked up the car from my storage unit today and transported by trailer to the workshop . The plan over the next week is to go completely over the car and make a list of the required parts. May the fun begin !!! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have begun to go through the car in order to make up a list of required parts for the project One job i had to do immeadiately was to drain the fuel from the car as it had been in the car for at least 3 years ,. on tracing fuel lines, i found the pipe coming from the tank in very poor condition and would have to be replaced - therefore decided to just cut this fuel line and drain the petrol from here .... I was shocked to find that i drained 14 gallons !!!! I knew i was going to find some interesting things but ... 14 gallons
A quick update from this weekend Parts now picked up from QVs and Maranellos Oil Filter Air filter Fuel filter Spark plugs Cam Belts , uprated tensioner bearings Aux belts Engine oil Gearbox oil All oils and coolant have been drained .. engine and gearbox oils were very clean ; coolant looked ok but there was some crystalisation of the antifreeze , so the system will be completely flushed Cam covers removed and original belts were in great condition, but these are going to be changed Initial inspection of braking system has been carried out - discs are really good , need to check calipers .. new brake fluid and pads required Removed the clutch slave cylider and found that the plunger was seized . After a lot of perseverance and soaking in penetrating oil we managed to free it - the cylinder bore looks good but there is slight pitting on the top end of the plunger. Will need to get a new seal and boot , but will look into possibly replacing the cylinder complete ( any advice welcome) Turned engine over by hand and this went really smoothly Was going to change the fuel pump- but found there is a very new one on the car . I will now wait till the operation is checked before deciding a change Various hoses are not in a good way so will need to replace Have not sourced a replacement battery yet , but will do a bit of research first to find the most suitable ( again advice welcome ) Lots of work to do this week . A big one - planning to attach a spare battery and check the electrical system so watch this space ...
Nice project! Before you connect the battery, clean all the fuses. Easy job and might save you some headaches down the road.
I bought my barnfind Mondial8 10 yrs ago. Most of the re-commissioning centred around seals, and hoses, also coolant header tank had gone porous and the old TRXs were as hard as bakelite (in the end, after my second set of new/old stock I went for replica cromadoras from superperformance & 16" with Pirelli P7s). Had clutch slave cylinder re-machined by a specialist workshop (I think in Oldham off the top of my head). re: electricals, some has gone a bit high-resistance, and we migrated a lot of the high-load items off the main board to a neat little satellite panel/box. It has been excellent fun, we've been down to Maranello once, Le Mans Classic twice. Enjoy - certainly in comparison to the 360 - the very analogue experience. NB Stainless Steel system enhance the accoustics no end John
+1 on this advice. I removed all my fuses and relays this weekend, cleaned the board and all contacts with electrical cleaner and put everything back together. Make sure you have a list of the proper fuse ratings and number the relays so they all go back in the right place. I found 3-4 fuses that looked partially "melted" but not blown, so I replaced them. Windows and wipers work much faster now too! Alden
Work carried out this week Cambelts and tensioner bearings changed Engine oil and Filter changed Spark Plugs changed Various hoses changed - hose fitted to fuel accumulator was badly perished so a replacement required ; could not track down a spare so have sent it to a company that can manufacture a replica , hope to have it by the middle of this week . Fuse/Relay board .. fuses and relays removed ,contacts cleaned , reseated . Spare Battery fitted to begin checking the electrical system .. majority of lights ok but there is an earth issue with one front indicator , also front spots not working . Headlamp raise/lower worked perfectly .. Further electrical checks/repairs this week. Carried out some battery research and will probably fit an Optima redtop RTC4.2 .. excellent cranking power and will fit nicely in the tray . 12v 50Ah 815CCA Length (mm) - 254 Width (mm) - 175 Total Height (mm) - 195 As long as the accumulator hose is delivered this week ,i am now hoping that we can attempt to start next weekend ... lets hope .
This is the fuse / relay board on the car . As you can see there is no fuse in the furthest left position , although i can see contacts in the space .. Does anyone know if there should be a fuse in this position please .. Thanks Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Leighton360, Remember that between drives, always keep that new Optima battery on a battery maintainer. They're a darn good battery, but like a fighter with a really good punch, but a glass jaw, they don't like getting hit by continual (normal usage) battery drain. The maintainer, is like the corner man being in the ring too, just for support. Cheers, Hank
+1, no fuse there. Diagram and list below. Look for two burned contacts in the "W" connector on the right side. Also, mark the relays with chronological numbers in order in case you ever start swapping them or removing them. The good thing is that there are only 3 types of relays other than the large SIPEA type for the wipers. Easy to swap them around if you have a problem. Look for my "Electrical Emergency Kit" to be on the market here soon. I am going to include a tester and spare relays and fuses to get you going if you have a failure. Have just ordered a new clutch slave cylinder from Italy . I was looking for new seals but the uk stockists were asking stupid prices . For ony a few pounds more than they wanted for the seals i managed to get a brand new complete cylinder . I found that the spring contacts on one of the park plug extesion tubes was missing - have ordered new . Replacement accumulator fuel line is in the process of being manifactured . Looking for a replacement rear fog light switch . There is a toggle type fitted , so need to fit an original one ... so if anyone knows where i can get one or has one for sale please pm me .#(new or old ) Continuing to work through electrical system .
Have not been in touch for a while due to me taking a holiday for a few weeks (thats a vacation to our US pals ) However ... Clutch slave cylinder arrived safely from Italy and fitted . I am having a new clutch hose being made as the outer sheathing had badly deteriorated Spark plug extension tubes renewed Accumulator fuel pipe returned from manufacture and fitted , new fuel filter installed. We were now happy to attemp a dry start so ..... 2 gallons of fuel placed in tanks , Optima battery connected , turned ignition key to start and ........... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENED !!! Checked and found that power was getting to the starter but no attempt to turn . Starter removed from car and fully stripped down and thoroughly cleaned ; nothing obvious found. Reassembled and tested and now woking perfectly . Refitted to the car and now fingers crossed . . This time the starter turned the engine really well, but it did not try to fire . Realised now that the fuel pump was not operating . Removed the pump and found that it was seized . I have now ordered a new pump - oem replacement . I was hoping it would run today, but not surprised we are having some issues due to the length of time its been in storage .. Probably wont be the last issue we have, but its part of the fun - progress is being made !!!!
Part of Ferrari ownership is the pleasure of repair and maintenance if you can. I call mine my boat because I work at it through the week to enjoy on the weekend. Actually if I get the chance I drive it all the time. If I need some small parts, if I have to look at something and need no tools, if I just need to see and talk to someone, if I need a gallon of milk and a pound of ham I take the Bertha Mae. It is my intention to wear this car out, find another and start all over again. Why date a super model and sleep in a different room?
.. hopefully as near as possible . On this point... At the moment my a/c compressor is off the car . We are almost at a stage where once the engine starts, we will be refitting all the auxillary items ( a/c compressor being one ) Not sure how heavy this exactly is - but it is certainly a lot of pounds . My thoughts are to leave it off the car due to the following .. 1. Weight reduction 2. Reading the a/c threads they seem to be quite problematic ?? 3. I live in the UK where we seldom have long periods of high temps . 4. On really sunny hot days i will be using the 360 spider !!! Obviously i would blank off all pipework etc, and keep all the bits if neededfor the future . Advice / Opinions welcome ...
Photos after she was machine polished last Thursday .. a RARE sunny day . Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have now come to the decision that the compressor is definitely being removed All associated pipework will also be removed or blanked off . My new fuel pump has arrived and i should be in a position to fit this tomorrow .. then we can attempt another startup ..... will it fire ????? . Exciting times . Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nice Mondial you bought! Congrats! They sure can use some TLC It is indeed carrying dead weight if you are not using the A/C. However, I would keep the bits in a box if you ever would sell it. Just a tip on the fuel hoses. I replaced all not having my bottom on fire when cruising. You'll be surprised how a good looking hose looks like from the inside Also the older fuel hoses cannot withstand the mix of today's fuel(s) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LCofRMA-dI[/ame] Great Ferraris to drive and a lot of fun taking them on holiday trips!
