What is the proper paint finish on the chassis number location in the engine bay? All black, or the number clear coated, or...? I know I have seen it somewhere here, but can't find it. Thank you. Regards, Alberto
Alberto, the chassis number area of the early Dinos - both the L- and the M-series - were all black. The clear coated bare metal area came later, during the E-series production, I believe. The photo below shows a late M-series car. Regards, Lars Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thats enlightening; can anybody confirm Lars' comment re E series number being black - did this differ between US and Euro E series?
A rectangular patch enclosing the numbers on my E Dino was unpainted (or perhaps clear-coated). It didn't look very neat to me, so I have sprayed it black (which is probably incorrect). Andres
It would have the bare metal area. To the best of my knowledge, all E-series should have that configuration, but I am not completely certain about the earliest examples of the series. Perhaps Matthias will know for sure. I recall seeing some early E-series car with an all black chassis number area, but they could easily have been painted over during a restoration. The GTS versions were all later versions, so they should have the number on bare metal. (As usual: As far as I know!) Regards, Lars
change was made around #05000, easy to find out what is correct, because the chassis no`s have different making... G.T. S (early) or GTS (late)
Matthias, woukd the 5000 cut-off apply to GTs? My #4866 had the unpainted number area. I wonder also if Ferrari would have taken the trouble to clear coat if the area were unpainted. It seems unlikely. My best, Andres
thanks Lars 05788 has always been chassis color, with no obvious clear area. does anyone have a picture of what that might look like?
send me PM with your e-mail address and I can send you the two different versions I can´t post more picture, reached the limit. Regards Matthias
Yes, mine looked like that. It didn't look very attractive. Maybe if the unpainted area were polished to get rid of the rust stain, it would look better, but then that wouldn't be original! I'm quite happy I painted over mine; it's much neater, as in the earlier photos.
