Well after reading the thread about DTV getting his 308 ripped off and recovered, I wanted to share the following info.

My next door neighbor just bought an Escalade SUT. Along with the purchase he bought a tracking devise for it. No it's not LoJack. It's BETTER. This thing gives you real time feed back of were you car is. It uses GPS to do this. You can long on to the site an see exactly were your car is as it's driving down the road. If you have an alarm on your car, it can notify you on your cell phone/pager that your car has been taken. You can also remotly shut the engine off. So even if the "stinky, maggot-infested, dope smoking, good for absolutely nothing POS" as Dane likes to call them ;), is driving your car, you can dissable it so that the engine will not run. Plus if the crooks flatbed it you can still see exactly were your Ferrari is and have the cops waiting to pounce on them when they stop.

Anyway the name of the system is called Mobile Guardian. Their website is http://www.mymobileguardian.com/

If any of you watched the VH1 show "Hogan Knows Best", this is the same thing hes used to track his daughter out on a date.

Now I don't have this system on my car just yet because I just found out about it, and no I'm not a rep for them. I just wanted to share the info with fellow Ferrari owners. Alarms these days aren't enough. When your Ferrari is left parked by itself, I think it is a peace of mind to know that you can shut if off, and even track it, if it ever were stolen.

I've always wondered about the clear window laminates that make the glass "bulletproof". It's kind of like window tint, only it's clear, and it goes on the inside and outside of the glass, and the doorpanel has to be removed to do the *entire* piece of glass (unlike tint). It's fairly expensive, but I might consider it if I were ever really concerned about my car being taken.

The only thing I worry about is what the p*ssed-off thief who can't get through my bullet-proof glass will do out of spite to the car.

The trick is to have more than one or many alarms, gps, etc on your vehicle. You need to have a basic alarm that will deter the casual thief. In addition to that a very well hidden gps tracker or equivalent immobilizer that the professional thief could never find. He would have no idea he was had. Yet, nothing is pro proof, if they want it, they will get it, they just may not keep it very long.

They definitely exist. I had window tint installed on my old Navigator at a place in Phoenix that did the installs for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office cars. Sure, it won't stop a .50 cal or VERY high powered handgun, but it will stop smaller caliber handguns, shotguns, sledgehammers, crowbars, etc.

I've seen some laminate that holds the shattered glass together after one bullet strike. Might make a good addition to a lexan window.

    ROFL!!!!!! So very true!

On the 308 here because of racing we are installing a batter cut off switch. Naturally when the car is not being driven by me i will turn the special 'key' on the hood to shut off the battery ground electrical and take the key with me. 3x8 cars and others have an easy way to simply unplug the car under the front bonnet, but a good thief can easily just reconnect it.

Many companies offer a battery cut off switch and they are only $35 or so and installation is easy. Just run/extent a ground wire to/from the switch. Those looking for more can choose doing the positive cable and also alternator wire.

Those concerned with turning off electrical that would also shut off the car's radio memory/clock can install a simple 4A glass fuse jumper as 4A will not start the car but allow enough voltage to keep the memory of their radio/clock going.

Another anti-theft device is the shift lock, but any good thief can pick those fairly easily.

Buy insurance. If my Ferrari is stolen, or any other car for that matter, I don't want it back anyway!

Interesting, Franklin. I'm actually the exact opposite. I figure if the car's been through such an experience, it deserves some TLC. Just my perspective.

    Good Grief

I had no idea you guys could turn this into a joke.

Anyway I just talked to a dealer and the system cost between $750-$1000 depending on who you buy it from. As for tracking the car, I think you get 10 free locates and then you can buy more. For 10 more locates it's $9, or 25 locates for $22, etcetera. I think thats a pretty good deal because the only reason you would need to track your car is if it wasn't were you left it.

I've heard of too many people who have had their car stolen and after recovery, while the insurance company paid for the body/paint damage, when mechanical problems surfaced a few weeks later due to abuse by the thief, their insurance company then refused to pay for mechanical repairs claiming they couldn't establish that they were related to the theft.

I think what you are describing is what "No Doubt" is talking about, something to hold the glass fragments together, not increase the ballistic protection.

I did a quick check on the Internet and found this:
    http://www.shattergard.com/
    http://www.shattergard.com/ballistic.html

But note that the 12"x12" samples are anywhere from one half to almost 2 inches thick (obviously this is not a simple "film"). Even the thinest sample (12"x 12") weighs over 6lbs! This is not going to fit in a normal door frame (would require modification), and a window would have to be fixed in place or have a VERY large motor to operate. (BTW O'Hara and Gess vehicles generally do not have operating windows for this reason, except for the drivers door window, which might open an inch or two.)
