Hi all. Am currently being asked to provide evidence of when my car was manufactured for the UK's vehicle licencing agency. I believe it to be roughly mid 1982 based on its chassis number.

Long story short, if it was made before 8th Jan 1983 it changes it to a historic vehicle which saves me a chunk of cash!

    Its a 2v GTSi - chassis number 41637.

Is there anywhere I can get any further info?

There's no plate with manufacturing date on the driver's door sill?

Sadly not. The car was a "grey" import into the US, so I'm guessing it was either removed at that point or it never had one.

Sure, the VIN is in all the usual places, but it doesn't give a year. I think maybe the carb cars had the year on one of the VIN locations, but not the injected cars?

Everything points to the car being produced in roughly April 82, based on other chassis number around it, but I think I might need slightly more solid evidence than just a few other chassis numbers surrounding it.

It's from https://f-register.com - unfortunately the virtual book is not downloadable as far as I can tell, just browsable online

Year of manufacture at the time was a US law. Cars built for other markets had no model year designation.

41637 was almost certainly built in March 82. If your country is anything like this one you will need a document from the factory, the importer or another government agency. I would check with the UK importer.

    Hi Lloyd

What was the original market of manufacture?

There may be an archivist in that country, equivalent of Tony Willis in UK who may be able to help with date of similar VINs into UK

If the car was built for a RHD market so Tony should have all information

Its a Euro car that was shipped to the US in the 80's. Apart from export documents from 1989 for it being shipped to Switzerland there is no other paperwork (it was in a barn in Switzerland for 31 years after that). It has some US items, marker lights, front bumper and had a smog pump fitted at some point (still has welded in airports in the ex manifolds). No date on it anywhere at all.

You are right, I already saw this "stamp" on my engine but I don't understand until today that is a date. I will double check.
    Thank you

If you can get the date of first reg in the UK (you don't say if it was originally shipped to the UK but it sounds like it might have been), DVLA will accept a manufacture date a reasonable number of months prior to that. Not sure if you know or would need the original reg number to trace that, but the DVLA database 'should' have the details.

Maybe if you call them and get a helpful person?

You would hope that they could search their database by Manufacturer and Chassis Number.

Unfortunately I have no idea of it’s initial country although it’s a LHD car.
When I bought it the company I used to import/register it in the UK, did a search and told me that it had never been registered in Europe. How accurate that is I don’t know. That led me to suspect it was shipped immediately to the US.
I have export documents from the US, an old US title (it’s last registration)and import docs into Switzerland from 1989 but that’s it.
It was never registered in Switzerland. it’s mileage on the import docs in 1989 is pretty much what it was when I bought it in 2022.
