Can someone explain to me how prozac,a drug prescribed for antidepression, can have suicidal thoughts as one of its main side effects ? Isnt that that exact opposite of what its intended for ?

I can. One of my buddies married a woman who did not tell him she was on Prozac for about ten years before they got married. Two months after the wedding, her doctor took her off it........My buddy wants to kill himself!

Years ago I had a gf that was on prozac and she had suicidal tendancies...I never knew until recently that that was a side effect of prozac.

WTF..what good is giving a drug to relieve depression if the outcome is suicide ?

Good news: "You won't be depressed anymore!"

Bad news: "You'll probably hang yourself instead!"

They probably just trying to cover their bases on lawsuits, so that somebody can't say "They killed themselves, must be prozac's fault".

The brain's chemical imbalance can get off even when on Prozac. That's why doctors monitor patients for proper dosage levels. If it does get out of whack then suicidal thoughts are a side effect.

Because although the drugs main purpose is the inhibition of Saratonin re-uptake (to keep that NT floating there longer) what happens is the metabolic pathways that breakdown that molecule become hyperactive to compensate for the extended periods of Saratonin avaliablility. As a result, if your Saratonin levels dip further and the metabolic pathway has become accustomed to being open more it is very much like crashing.

Sounds like a very dangerous drug that probably shouldnt be as widely prescribed as it is.

Amen. The drug companies don't even know how SSRI's work, but they're prescribed for nearly everything; from anxiety to depression. Despite there being more effective (much more) drugs to treat anxiety, doctors oftentimes are less likely to prescribe the more-effective benzodiazepines because of abuse potential. Instead, people are put on these SSRI's and lose touch with themselves. Also, in a double blind study (I have the source, but can't find it right now), sertraline (Zoloft) did WORSE in treating clinical depression than a placebo!! How's that for getting jerked around by the pharmaceutical industry.

No more so than Norepinephrine re uptake inhibitors like Strattera. I think out of all the SSRI's Wellbutrin is by far the scariest. It has a large effect on dopamine activity.

Even scarier are the doc's that write scripts for Seroquel to help patients sleep.

Taking Prozac is not going to make you want to kill yourself any more than you were going to kill yourself before you started taking it. All this "it makes you kill yourself" is jive made up by attorneys and people who can make money on the claim. You wont hear anyone make the claim except the media, attorneys, and paid "expert witnesses" or misc people trying to cash in on a death of someone who was taking it.

It's been proven that that 78% of the people who attempted suicide while on Prozac had attempted suicide before they were on Prozac. It's not going to make you prone to do anything you were not going to do in the first place.

Which begs the question, what's the point? I know a lot of people who are on drugs like this and I find it baffling. Yes life is tough, but is it worth the hassle, money, health risks, and mental issues associated with taking pills to make you feel better? I find it disturbing that there's a pill to treat every "condition" out there. I actually laughed out loud the first time I saw the commercials for the pills that treat restless leg syndrome.

I have to agree with this. I was on Prozac at one time after a bad bad accident. This was in 1989 to about 1991ish. Prozac was introduced in 1988. It was there to stir up brain cells and help you become more active and not so depressed. Drugs like these do different things to different people, but I don't believe they induce anymore suicidal thoughts than they already do. At the time I was taking it, everything was a blur. Certain filters of thinking and saying inappropriate things were just not there.

This only happens when an improper dosage or medicine is prescribed. People react differently to different SSRI's. I tried 3 other medicines before I settled on lexapro. Prozac is so widely prescribed even for people who don't need it than when one of these people off's themselves Prozac gets blamed. I've played the medication game for a long time and there are too many other factors to exclusively blame Prozac.
