Before anyone gets their underpants in a bunch I want you to know I am NOT a video game freak but find myself cordinated enough to get through a game.

So I get charged up by seeing all of the posts on F-chat about how great PS2 and GT4 is.." it's so real", "it's awesome", "the tracks are right on the money". So I go out and buy the entire package...hook it up to the big screen and stereo. I am jazzed because it looks great..sounds great..and can't wait to tackle my favorite track..Laguna Seca. I instruct there and enjoy it very much.

I don't disagree with these comments except for this...this game is NO WHERE NEAR DRIVING THE REAL THING. Not even close..

I can't keep a car on the track, I can't control the freaking car with the controller..etc. Hell I even went out and bought the steering wheel and pedals. What a joke !!!!!

I am frustrated (but laughing at the whole thing) and I think this game is a complete rip-off. Go jump in a car and spend $200 on an open track event. No substitution for the real thing. Leave the video games to Pac Man - Frogger - or Pong.

I agree with you about the realism issues. Though, it entertains me and I can't take a beer with me too a real track event ;)

    Thanks for agreeing.

For good sake I hope no one goes out like I did and wastes their hard earned time and blows it on a video game that you cannot even drive.

I believe if you want anything close to the real thing is buy an Arcade game and sit your butt in one of those things.

Better yet drive to a track and ask to be a passenger... even at moderate speed (for safety and non pant soiling fun).

P.S. I just got done packing everything up..good thing Best Buy has that 30 day return policy. Bought it today at 2:25 ... done at 4:15. Back tomorrow by the end of the day. I can't wait for the sun to come out so I can get into the real thing.

Is there ANY video game on the market today that is exactly like the real-life equivalent? No. But that does not prevent the games from being VERY entertaining. Take, for example, "Call of Duty" or "Vietcong" (PC first-person shooters), they are not truly like being in war or getting shot at, but they are still very fun to play.

My point is this, even if a game is not an entirely realistic rendition of its real-life counterpart, it may still be fun. I don't think we'll see "realistic" games for another good many years.

Get an XBOX and Project Gotham Racing 2. Now that game is FUN! You can play online, too, with many people. Oh yea, and they have Ferraris!

I kind of agree. Realism is on the top of my list when it comes to buying racing sims. I recently played this game before buying it and well like I said before, the physics on this game are a joke. Overtaking on curves has never been so easy with cars that feel like they're 6 tons and serve as battering rams for your opponents. I dont know how big of a newbie but I've played racing sims better than this and they've all had better physics and realism.

Let's just hope Forza is better.

Hell, if i had a 355 like yours (very nice BTW) the only thing I would do with my PS2 and copy of GT4 is sell them! I wouldnt know what driving a fast car like that is like however, so I just stick with GT4 for now...

Videogames will never be a substitute for the real thing. I like GT4 for the simple fact that it is semi-realistic (not like a true sim, but not like some arcade game), so that you can really just mess around and have fun.

In terms of realism, from what I gather the two more popular games out there are Simbin's GTR and Live for Speed. Not that i would ever rely on a videogame to teach me about real world driving dynamics, but they are much more sensitive and much more difficult to drive properly (but the sounds in GTR are just money).

If your trying to acheive as much realism as possible from a sim, then Force Dynamics(http://www.force-dynamics.com/) sells full motion simulators, check out the videos they are mighty impressive. The systems are far beyond what i would spend, but it seems like it would be a fun toy.

    Mario,
I'm like you. I have it and have a hard time getting around the track in a decent time, but I have improved each time I play. My Laguna Seca times are about double what is posted here, and it took me about 10 times to even get around it once (darn Corkscrew!). For me it is easier than the F1 game I have, where I can barely get through a corner. The 355 Challenge game is pretty fun, though.

But, like you said, it is just a game, and I have fun playing it every now and then. I am sure with all of the licences, tracks and cars, I will play it for a few years, but it is just that, playing a game and fun.

I would love to take my 328 around Laguna Seca, but it is going into a shipping container next month and following me to Alaska, so my Laguna Seca experience will be limited to GT4 and 355 Challenge.

You sound llike my wife !!!! :) you are right though.

My wife saw the reply of my first lap and asked if I was feeling ok. I asked why? She said " you suck! " :)

    Alex,

You are mentioning a good point. I am blessed to own the real thing and even more blessed to be able drive around the track in real time. Hopefully I didn't come across as being too much of a cry baby.

I just however, believe the video game has been talked up a bit too much or I was Gary..Gary Gullable for believing how "real" it would be. I am still laughing how I ending up spinning in turn 1 when turn 1 is not even a turn..but rather a small elevation and light wheel correction to set-up into the real turn...turn 2 (double apex if you want). I spun on what i consider a straigh away in an M-3 !!!!!

I just suck at the game and I believe the remote control funtions are non realistic, oversensitive, and just plain over engineered.

The track and computer graphics are beautiful and the people who made the game should be commended. But get the darn game back to a modicum of ease..

    Mule,

    funny OT...

I run into you in Monterey (remember canary row Ghiradelli) and we promise each other to meet at Concorso Italiano and following week. However, I don't see you or run into for the entire Ferrari week last August !!!!

Sorry we never got to meet again...maybe next time we can meet for Ice Creame.

Back on topic...I will stick to the real thing for now and play with my nephews when they have B-day parties at Chuckee-Cheese :)

You dont like it because you suck at it . Just get better and you ll have a blast . Serioulsy . Esp with the steering wheel .

I just did my first Nring lap tonight for the first time with a CLK DTM and it was amazing . Of course its not the same as the real thing but its still pretty amazing . You feel the bumps ,the curves, the kurbes , the jumps , the speed ..
    Its amazing .

    Mario,
I kept an eye out for you and your wife the whole week, but there was about a million people it seemed.

Next time may be a bit of a drive for you, since I will be back in Alaska, but if you get the fishing urge, you have an open invitation. Without your prodding, I wouldn't have gone to Monterey last August at all. So I owe you, it was the best time of my life.

I am going to be in Vacaville and Napa the last week of May on my way to Seattle to catch the boat. Maybe we can get together then and try a few rounds of GT4!

i wanted GT4, but then i got sick of waiting for it. too overated imo. although in may, if you have/get xbox, a game called Forza Motorsport is coming out. imo it will be better, plus it has ferraris in it, and you could also pick up project gotham racing 2. if you want realism, get Forza.

LOL, I wasn't sure if you would be able to see the humor in my comment!

I think Andrew is right, give it a few laps on the Nring and you might reconsider!
Well, actually, a couple laps on the Nring might drive you so insane that it will only frustrate you more ;)

The most realistic racing game I've ever played is 2002's Grand Prix 4 with the 2004 season and physics update from http://simracingworld.com

Leaves almost every other driving sim I've played for dead. The track are GPS modelled, so the camber, width and elevation changes of the tracks are spot on (as they were during the 2001 FIA Formula One World Championship). Wet weather physics are superb and I can't think of any other game bar EA's F1 Challenge '99-'02 with alot of updates that comes close. Even still, the latter's track are not GPS modelled and nowhere near as accurate.

However, the learning curve is very very steep. I've been playing F1 sims since 2001 and racing open-wheelers in real life for several years also. You'll find it frustrating if you have zero experience.
