I have an older plasma with a DVI output on it. I bought a DVI to HDMI cable. Hooked the HDMI end into the PS3 and the DVI end into the TV--I get a beautiful picture but no sound--Any suggestions?

Went into the Sound Settings menu and it says This HDMI device cannot be used for audio output? What am I missing here? Is the HDMI cable for video only? If so, then I am screwed the older plasma does not have an audio optical output like the back of the PS3 has...

I have my PS3 outputting (is that even a word?) video AND sound via a single HDMI cable.

AFAIK, DVI can NOT transmit sound so I believe that's your problem. So even though the HDMI cable can transmit video/sound the DVI cable is the bottleneck.

That is weird, because I had it hooked up to my cable box(HDMI end into cable box and DVI end into TV) with that exact cable and the sound came thru with no problems...Had great HD picture...

Yeah, DVI doesn't do sound, if you still have the A/V cables, you can plug that in (maybe just the sound one, not sure which one worked for us when we had the same problem) Regarding the cable box, maybe the cable box had the sound output, so that might be the reason that it worked before.
