When the flashing lights appear...

  1. Gas it, I'll be doing 160 by the time he gets both hands on the wheel.

  2. Pull over, I'm a sissy.

  3. What do the lights mean? <gets back to yelling at the kids in back>

EDIT: assume you are in a very familiar area and have the 'option' of realistically running, it he hasn't got your plate.

Are you more likely to pull over and take your ticket, or gas it and beat the guy using the radio (no-fly zones near airport, offramps terain masked, combined with sheer acceleration and the notion that a Crown Vic tops out at about 134.)

    Well?

It really depends on the situation.....

If there is anough room in a residential area to make a bunch of turns and get your car cover on then yeah.

    Freeway? No.

i didnt vote cause it depends how far away i would be from him. If i see him turn around from the other side and kick his lights on.....Im headin for the nearest backroad and then ducking in the closest driveway. If not, Im pullin over and taking it.

    Depends.

On a 4-lane highway, I will pull over and take the punishment.

On a remote 2 lane at night, good luck trying to catch me.

Then...the best ever stroke of genius and intrepidity that I have ever done is how I evaded hot pursuit in a small town in Alaska....

I evaded 3 times in my life. First was street racing my Corvette when I was in school... not a new one of course, but it was still fast. I was racing on the highway doing maybe 140-150 but a cop on an overpass radioed ahead and we got busted. Actually I had already exited and was on my way back when I saw the roadblock and about 20 PoPo's flying the other way. I was a dumb kid of 17 yrs old so I freaked that they were gonna call my parents and so I called the local PD and they told me they were looking for me in force and a herd of PoPo's were en-route to my house since they had my plate. So I stupidly turned myself in and hoped for leniency which I did not get. But this was more than 10 years ago before the whole street racing thing became an epidemic. Nowadays it would likely land me in jail.

Second time we were on bikes on some back roads in NH, going over the limit by a lot, but just having fun in the twisties. Local called the cops, he tried to pull over about 20 bikes, we scattered and one dumbass in back pulled over. They worked him pretty hard and he sang like a canary and gave up the info on the guys he knew in the group (thankfully not me). The cops found one of the guys hanging out at a Dennys waiting for the heat to die down, and they had about 4 cruisers pull in and do a felony arrest on him IN the restaurant with guns drawn and all! He got a good lawyer and got off with a $1k donation to some local charity and a slap on the wrist.

Third time I had been pulled over in my Viper by some jackass cop who had a hardon for a youngish guy in a sports car. I wasn't speeding massively, but I wanted to pass an 18-wheeler and get over for my exit, which is when he clocked me at 92 in a 65. I was cool with him - shut the motor, rolled window down, yes sir, no sir, kept my hands on the wheel. Wrote me up for everything - obscured inspection sticker (window was dirty), no front plate, illegal seatbelts (I had 5-points instead of normal ones), etc, etc. About a week later I was on the same highway about 3 miles up and I was doing maybe 80-85 in a 65, and I see a state cop DIVE over the grass median going about 40mph, clumps of grass flying and lights on doing an emergency turn. I made brief eye contact and it was the same guy. Exit was RIGHT there, so I executed a hard turn onto a smaller highway, then first exit onto a 2-lane main road, couple of quick turns, and I was gone. Felt really good actually, but I wouldn't ever do it again unless the cop was way back, did not get my plate, and I could reasonably plead ignorance and say I had no idea there was a cop back there.

Its just not worth it. The biggest of tickets, even reckless driving or driving to endanger is not even in the same ballpark as felony evasion ALONG with those others (DTE, RD). If you try to run and get caught, you WILL do time. If you try to run and the cop chases you and gets in an accident, you CAN get charged with murder! No joke. Even the worst of reckless driving will likely only cost you a 3-6 month suspension + a big fine, and with a good lawyer you can almost certainly get that plead down to something much less harsh.

My .02 from being there in my younger (stupider) days.

I jumped on police long time ago on highway (then exit to residential area)

I do admit it was exciting, and felt like I was driving great! Now I look back the action as totally irresponsible & dangerous.

Knowing what penalty I would get now, I'll choose to pull over.

Knowing the area is an advantage you need. I have been able to evade in certain situations where I was either a) with a large group or b) in a lightly patrolled area that I knew very well.

About 5 years ago, I was heading out from the town area of a particular so-cal community to the residential (estates) which are 6 miles down a twisty nearly-empty road. A cruiser pulled out about 500 ft behind and turned on his lights. I knew there were almost never cops out in the estates, so I gunned it and used the familiarity and better cornering of my car to ensure I would have plenty of distance between me and the cop by the time I made it to the residential area. If I didn't put a few seconds on him by then, I think I would have given up rather than risk lives in suburbia. It's all about discretion and judgement. There will be times when you KNOW you can get away.

I have ditches the cops a few times. No big chase, just a quick ditch and hide. It has to be when they are far enough back that you can get off of the road and out of sight, other wise forget it. The closest one was, the second day I had my 348. This mustang was on my butt, so close that I couldn't see his bumper, so I decided to see what my new Ferrari could do. Well to my bad luck there was a motorcycle cop on the side of the freeway when I did this. He didn't get on the freeway right away, which is when I down shifted and nailed it. I got off at the first off ramp and hid in a parking lot for a couple of minutes. Well this dude really had it out for me. As I was pulling out I saw him zip by, with the lights still on, going the other way. He went one way, so I went the other. Well only one block from were I was there was another motorcycle cop sitting in the middle of the intersection with the lights on looking for me. Good thing Ferrari's are so low. I made a u-turn and ducked into a neighorhood. As I did I saw another motorcycle cop, lights a blaze, fly pass headed another direction. He must have radio'd ahead, or they were all coming back from lunch, or something. Anyway, I took all the back roads I knew of home, put the car in the garage and didn't drive it for the rest of the week.

Funniest "run" story happened to my dad.

US280 through AL. Had a state trooper try to pull a trooper turn on him in light rain. Cop went into the guard rails on the side of the road. Dad never saw it.

Dad gets stopped 65 MILES DOWN THE ROAD. Other trooper accuses him of running. Dad says he had no idea he was even being chased. Cop wants to write it up as evading. Dad asks if trooper wants to have his picture on front page of newspaper the next day. Cop changes his mind, lets him off with a verbal warning.

I've run a few times now that they've been singling me out when I'm not even speeding. They follow me for miles and haras me even in unmarked cars!!! Now when I see them see me or they turn around I gun it like he!! and find some side streets, but if they ever hit the lights even relativly close to me I'll give up. Now on the highway, I'd gun it even with lights unless he's on my a$$. If your car can do 150+ go for it; they mostly can't keep up, then find the quickest off ramp and hide :).....car covers help; just park, cover, and laugh when they drive by :-D

Ohh, and only do this when it's safe to do :)

No cop takes a shot at me and lives to brag about it.

    {I'm in one of my evil moods}

How do you bring a mans life to an end and not go to jail for his death?

Make him take his own life.

Take away his wife, kids, friends, job and money... he'll eat his bullet sooner or later.

    Depends.

On the road, I rarely speed so I never thought about it. Plate, Motorola, lame car (truck actually) ... etc etc etc. I must be a *****.

Out on the trails though (yes, there are cops on the trails here!) ... good luck catching me. No plate on the dirtbike, and it's a race-ready Honda 250CR (around 60hp at the flywheel, perfect suspension ... ). I won't even need to hit the powerband to dust cops. :D

anybody who thinks running is an option ought to do some research on how the average police officer behaves psychologically and physiologically after a high-speed chase, and what that statistically can mean to the individual being chased.

    it's an impressively stupid play.

don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

Pull over and face the music and at least live to drive another day. Why should mine or your recklessness put others lives on the road in danger? Why risk long loss of licence, possible jail time or even death, Just pay the freaking ticket. like I say "don't do the crime if you can't pay the fine" Would think those out there with wife's and kids on the road would agree on this

I have only "ran" once. And it was under ideal circumstances.

I was on my way back home on the highway one evening, when 2 cars came flying by me (Jag and BMW), and I decided to join the fun. We spent a few moments changing positions, and running quite fast. The road was fairly clear, so we weren't putting people in danger. I was in the lead and as we turned a left bend, there was a trooper sitting in the inside shoulder/ditch, and his lights go on immediately. I look in my rearview mirror, and notice that the BMW and Jag are slowing down. In a fraction of a second, I made the decision to run. The cop never came after me, and opted to pull over one (or both possibly) of the other cars. Worst case scenario is he could have radioed ahead and had me pulled over, but I could have played dumb and said I didn't see the first cop.

If I was one-on-one (without the other vehicles there), I never would have ran. The risks are far too great, and the penalty is far too great.
