I just cashed in on my few past LEO encounters for which I got paper (and yes, I'm always polite, courteous, respectful, etc but never get warned or let off :/ ). A youngish cop pulled me after tailgating a short distance and the exchange went something like this:
    LEO: "You want to race?"
Me in the 328: "uh...[looks around in disbelief]"
...[incredulous look on face] "You $h!ttin' me?"
LEO: "Yeah c'mon, we'll go hit Rt X up here but I'll have to break off"

Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth I obliged quite excitedly and we did a roll on from about 30 to 'I ain't tellin'' (I don't want to open a discussion about racing on public thoroughfares). Normally I'm getting checked for papers while standing w.my dog next to my motorcycle or some such apparent harassment so this made my day! Is this an omen of LEO encounters to come (not to this extreme of course) owning a Ferrari? (Rhetorically speaking) do cops tend to give passes to F-cars or are the cars an attractive nuisance? I don't know yet but I like how my ownership has begun :D

And please, this is not a thread intended to invite admonishments, lectures, scoldings, etc about street racing; it is simply to be taken at face value: a cool story of a super cool LEO who wanted to have some fun with a cool car :) Just enjoy the story for what it is!

P.S. Yes, I pretty well smoked that PI Crown Vic ;)

Yeah that is a good way to start. I have had great luck with parking, actually parked my 328 on the sidewalks of North Beach (read as little italy of San Francisco) my first few weeks of ownership and I have seen the cops looking at the car. Never got a ticket but always to scared to walk up and find out what they were thinking. I did get my first speeding ticket in December :( but the cop was way cool. Congrats on the ride.

Funny. Been told that your experience used to be almost common amongst the original hot rodders. There were a lot less people on the road back then and cops had less crap to deal with in smaller towns. They had fun and appreciated cars just like everyone else did.

    Cool story.

I bought my E36 M3 from a deputy in NC. I was test driving it VERY nicely when he finally got fed up and told me "step on it". This was on a twisty back-road, during the day with no traffic. Alway nice to have a radar deflector riding with you. He told me he pulled up to a Viper at a light (small town) and told the guy to "light them up". The guy did a double take and asked if he was kidding. The deputy told him this was his one chance to get away with it. The dude lit the tires from one light to the other. He told me most of the cops in the area were real car guys and tended to cut people slack AS LONG AS THEY WEREN'T BEING STUPID. Of course he did tell me the state guys had no sense of humor and even the deputies didn't like them!

Of course where I am now I've been yelled at (with Doug328) for going slow in formation with no traffic around. Sometimes you just can't win.

Awesome!!! Where was this? In Westchester?

I always have bad luck. Never get warnings. Just tickets.

I've never heard of anyone actually taking the cop up on a race for fear of getting ticketed.

As a 328 owner, I'm surprised that you smoked a Crown Vic .. some of those cop cars are pretty fast, especially on the Interstate. In the curvies, I can see you dusting him off tho. Good story .. one that would never happen here in NoCal with the CHP.

fun story. my brother is a police officer that also loves the cars. last summer he asked a guy in a kirkham cobra to show him what he had...the kirkham burned the tires off as it sped away!

there are some police officers out there that love to see the cars and live the dream through we owners.
