Purchase in Canada ship to USA

no real difference as any out of country purchase... DOT regs apply accordingly... then there is the issue of import tax which can be 2-3% ( what ever the current rate is ) plus additional fees for costs of shipping. It would be OK for a unique car not normally on sale here, for the any recent production car probably not worth the effort.

I know several Canadians that buy a car in the US for their long term use while here, it is easier and more cost effective for long term.

Yes and simply because most Canadian vehicles do not meet the importation and safety regulations US vehicles require. All this information is listed on the NHTSA website as I had a debate earlier today concerning R32-R33-R34 Skylines.

What make and model and I can tell you if it is even legal in the US or if it will be impounded, all the info is online.

 

"Most"? Nonsense. Most Canadian spec vehicles meet AND exceed the US requirements, since the US wimped out on bumper impact requirements in the early 80s and dropped their standard from 5 mph to 2.5 mph, and Canada retained the earlier 5 mph standard. For emissions and other safety, Canada has always mirrored the US requirements.

Skylines are irrelevant, since those were coming into Canada under the 15 year old exemption, while the similar exemption in the US is 25 years.

One sticking point is that Canada didn't require VIN stickers on each body panel, and some manufacturers omitted them on Canadian market cars.

I have never heard of someone wanting to buy a car in Canada to import to the US. It is almost always the other way around as cars like everything else are more expensive in Canada. With the Canadian economy exceeding the US especially throughout the economic crisis there is no shortage of money around especially in cities like Vancouver that I call the "city of money".

I agree with the poster about Canadian versus US requirements. In my experience with both cars and motorhomes the Canadian vehicles have to have 5mph tested bumpers and daytime running lights etc. Canadian vehicles have to have the same requirements as US vehicles and more. When I was looking vack in around the year 2000 I would have had to have the bumpers on a 355 changed to Canadian crash test standards.
