I have been an owner of a 328 which I have sold and am considering the purchase of a 1971 246 GT. My question is, the car has no bumpers. The owner is adamant that the car was purchased new without bumpers. There is no sign of damage nor mounting holes. I am aware that when Ferrari exported cars to North America that many features of the car were changes for safety. So, is this possibly a European version and as a result is quite legit. Lastly, I am concerned about parts availability into the future, a comment around this concern would be appreciated.

    Cheers Gary

No way it was delivered without bumpers!

Parts availability is much better than most other Ferrari's. All mechanical parts are ok and major other parts as wel. (see f.i. dinoparts in Germany, almoast every part avialable).

There are no true 71 model year dinos' delivered in the us. there are a very few 72 model years that were built in late 71.

having said that, all dino's were delivered with bumpers. other than the nart dino, there weren't racing dino's and the nart dino has bumpers.

the bumperless look isn't bad, in fact, i rather like it. don't believe it is something special in the dino world. bump a bumper and your pocket book will hurt. bump a bumperless dino and.....well, more than your pocket book will hurt.

they are simple cars with simple mechanicals, relatively speaking. parts are avalible, but not cheap. body parts get expensive more because of the fitting and painting than the part cost.

going from a 308 to a 246 seemed crazy when i bought my 246, but no regrets.....

post photos of the car without disclosing where it is to avoid vultures.....if the bumpers have been removed, i imagine more modifications were made and you don't want to be on the back side of that equation, it can get to be expensive looking for precious trim pieces

Tx246 - Are you sure about this? While my three Dinos were built in latter part of 1971, two were U.S. models (after DOT defined the requirements), and one was a standard model (I avoid using the term Euro as they were all Euro until 1972, and then some were manufactured for the U.S. market). There were 1970 and 1971 246s delivered to the U.S. through Chenetti (Connecticut). They were simply standard models, and sold through Chenetti to local sports car dealers. He was the importer, essentially FNA of his day.
