When I removed the rear brake calipers on my 94 348 and I was surprised to have shims fall out. Apparently they were between the caliper mounting bolt(s) and hub. Could someone please explain the purpose of the spacers ( item 10 or 11 on attached drawing) and how to determine the correct size far a specific car. The ones that fell out measure .69 and 1 mm. The WSM and My348.com does not mention them and a search here did not turn up anything. Also the attached drawing shows spacers on the top bolt only, is that correct ?

    Thanks,

There's 2 spacers on both the top and the bottom - without them your disc wont sit in the middle of the caliper when viewed from above and you may have difficulty putting the pad back in the narrower side.

Just out of curiosity are you asking because you are struggling to put the bolts back with the spacers in place?! LOL They are a nightmare but a trick I found was to use a generous blob of copperease to glue the 2 spacers together then another blob to stick the spacers to the caliper. Line up the holes in advance then gently bring the caliper round to the correct setting then push the bolt through.

I've got a pic somewhere on my DIY restoration thread but cant find it - grrrr!!!

    Jeff348,

First of all thanks for getting back to me so quickly and the link to your excellent write up.

The primary reason for asking was to get a better understanding of what the shims were intended to do. Also your tip on sticking the shims to the caliper is helpful.

Thanks again and another instance of the brotherhood helping each other.
