I've always been curious, what is the purpose of the opening on the front lower air-dam on the TR? It's only on the driver's side. Just a styling cue, or does it feed an oil cooler or something?

I believe it is an opening for a hitch for (flatbed)towing purposes.

It's where the air is drawn in for the air conditioning condensor. Battery on one side in front of pasenger wheel, air con condensor in front of other wheel.

That's why it's the same irrespective of LHD or RHD models.

You are right too. The small hole in the middle is for the towing eye.
