I was out with my 2004 360 Modena (manual) this evening. I parked it for 2 hours with the parking lights on. When I went to start it, the battery was dead!

This has never happened to me before and since it was late and I was going to be stranded, I asked a couple of friends to give me a push while I tried to throw the clutch in 2nd gear. I tried it 3 times (twice in 2nd gear and once in 3rd) but I couldn't get it to start.

I ended up calling the dealer's hotline and they sent me a flatbed truck and took the car.

Do you guys think I might have damaged anything with those push-start attempts? I'm thinking the 360 is just like any normal manual transmission car. Or am I wrong?

Nah mate, you wouldn't do any damage ;) When you replace your battery make sure you get your charging system checked over :)

you should be ok. the owners manual even states you can push start an F1 car in the event of a dead battery.

In the old days, I used push start in the highest gear...ei 5th/6th.

Worked for me on a couple different cars and bikes.

Interesting that push starting is in the manual.

The battery can't be really "dead" or you won't have fuel injection or spark.

    PUSH DEPARTURE

In the event of malfunctioning of the starting system, a "push departure" is possible, procedure as follows:

    -Perform the "System Start-Up" phase;
-request "UP" when vehicle is gaining speed with the gearshift in "N".

In any case, avoid this procedure except in event of emergency!!!

Thanks for the great info Steve ;)

It just seems weird that you could actually push start a auto trans thats all, but I reckon that this would only work with a charged battery after you primed the F1 system, I would imagine a dead/discharged battery you would be unable to push start a F1.

Maybe someone here has actually done this and could chime in?

yeah. the system would have to be primed.

the reason push starting a standard automatic doesnt work is the torque converter. cant lock the trans to the engine.

I am thinking that you are correct if you have no alarm.

I was not thinking torque converter. F1's don't have this but I did not know the car would shift to anything except park or neutral if the engine was off. I did not know you could hit the stater and shift a rolling F1 to 2nd gear anf gas it to get it to start. It is good to know you can. I wonder what the car's alarm system thinks when the engine is off though. Perhaps there is feedback to the alarm system that prevented the poster with the 360 manual to start in 2nd gear. You can have a basically dead car with decent alternator and bump start a manual trans in 99% of trys.
