What is everyone's thoughts on a black PVD coating. I'm considering purchasing a Panerai PAM 104 which has had an aftermarket (not OEM) PVD coating. I have to say that it looks great and I'm leaning towards buying it. Just wanted to hear what everyone thinks of PVD.
Does the non OEM PVD coating lower the value?
I will post a pictures soon.
    Thanks,

While I like it on the Rolex Daytona, it does devalue the watch in the aftermarket. If that's a consideration.

My nixon has a black PVD coating. It looked great for the first year but has worn significantly since then.

Before I became a watchmaker I was a vacuum deposition expert for Bell Labs, among other places. When I later worked in product development for watches I was arguing with our Swiss vendor about using an anti-reflection coating on the outside of the sapphire crystals (front and back) for our watches. They asked 'who do you think you are, a vacuum coatings expert?' and I replied 'yes, one with four patents in the field'.

PVD is an allied process, but still not up to the rigors of an active wristwatch wearer over time. As much as I like the way some of the 'converted' watches like Pro Hunter look I'd not buy one.

    i agree with the above:
love the look but would not pull the trigger, as your watch will be difficult to sell, especially after it get marred from use.

I think it looks good, however I would not buy one. As it is a modification from factory OEM, so I would think it would devalue the watch. It is similar I think to, would you prefer a OEM standard car or one with non OEM modifications?
