I had a similar thing happen with my BMW.

I had a pucture repaired a few months prior to the tire disintegrating. I had not been compulsive about checking the tire pressure. One morning while I was driving about 70 miles/hour I noticed a transient smell of burning rubber. A few seconds afterwards the anti-skid system started to slow down the car despite my firm foot on the gas pedal. I could not pull over right away as I was on a freeway with no shoulder. I drove another 1 mile or so to an exit. There, I found the tire copletely disintegrated off the rim leaving just the side wall intact. I'll post a pic when I get home.

The deflated tire rotating at 70 MPH overheated the sidewalls causing it to fail.
