I'm pulling the front calipers for a rebuild. My original plan was to use vise grips to close off the rubber lines before pulling the brake line from the caliper. I've done this in the past on other cars, then hung the lines up, and never really had a problem with brake fluid leaking.

The rubber lines on the 328 are very hard. I am concerned that if I use the vise grips, I will damage the lines.

For those who have pulled their calipers, what technique did you use? Alternatively, does anyone know the thread and pitch of the line, so that I can go get a cap for it? I suppose I could go the "baggie and rubber band" technique, but that's a mess.

Get a short piece of rubber/flexible hose that fits neatly, slip that over the end of it & then stuff the other end of that with a piece of wood/plastic/metal that will seal it (or crimp that with some grips or a clamp) ?

I usually stick an unpainted golf tee in the flare on the end of the hose. if that's too large to fit, vinyl caps available at any store that sells wire rack shelving like Elfa, will work. (Home Depot or The Container Store is where I've bought these). Finally, at any Auto parts store, pick up some vacuum port caps (usually various sizes in rubber) and cap off the flare end at the fitting.

Of course, if your brake hose is that hard, I guess you're replacing it, anyway, right?

I used the opportunity to also flush the old brake fluid out of the system anyway. Depending on how long you yours has been in there maybe you'd want to do that as well.

Replace the hoses! If the calipers need rebuilding the hoses should be new. Once you have the new lines you can take one down to the parts store to "shop" for fittings.

I collect all the little plastic plugs and caps that parts come with when new. I usually can find one in the assortment to block off a brake line while I'm working on things.
