I know there is often confusion about the Mark (IV or V) of the quattroporte. As the Quattroporte II was never officialy produced, I think some think the big De Tomaso era quattroporte is the 2nd generation. So this makes the last one (the mark V) being sometimes confused with a mark IV...

 

While by no means an expert there seems to be some confusion as the QI is well known. QII is also well known as a small production version. The QIII was also sold in the US as well but the QIV does not seem to have been sold n the US so I sometimes see the newer QV referred to as a IV but mainly where there is a US connection.

 

I've never see the QIV pictured in the first post called anything other than a IV. I was at the factory presentation of that car back in 1994 Cortina and that's what they called it. Later the updated version of that one, courtesy of Ferrari, was know as the QPIV Evoluzione. It didn't look all that different.

Here in the USA we got the QPI and then the QPIII. Once Ferrari took over we saw the Quattroporte and all of it's various flavors since then.

AFAIK the newer one is just known as the Quattroporte. NO one here with any knowledge of the marque calls this a IV or even a V which would be accurate.

 

Hence the confusion. Here it is always called a Quattroporte IV, I think. See this link which is good at setting out all the models.

I've never heard the first car shown in this post called anything else anywhere else but a Quattroporte IV.

 

You are wrong -

this car is the QP IV no matter if Maserati did not produce the QP II. But as this car exists and is also recognised as the QP II the chronology is clear.

The De Tomaso QP was the Mk III this blue one was the Mk IV and the current one is the Mk V.

So - no confusion at all!
