I'm contemplating a strange conversion utilizing an '80 QP III engine & suspension. However, the QP engine is placed well forward of the front "axle line", thus placing the engine through the grill of the project car. In order to retain the front stub frame & suspension of the QP III, we will need to relocate the engine further rearward, which will necessitate a much shallower oil pan.
Therefore, I ask if anyone may know of the dimmentional difference in height between a stock '80 QP 4.9L oil pan, and that of say a Bora, or Ghibli with the dry sump system?
It would be great to find an easy, bolt-on way out of this issue.
    Sickly disturbed, RF.

You might want to contact Wil Degroot https://www.exoticars-usa.com/about/
He built a hand made car based upon the QPIII chassis and engine.

Thanks! I have a call into him now. I remember that build. I'm just trying to squeeze a QP III Engine in where it doesn't belong though. Does anyone have the overall height of the dry sump pan available? Say from the top/gasket surface where it mates to the engine block, down to the lowest point?

    Many Thanks, RF.

Hello again. Well I’ve just been out to have a measure and the 115 dry sump is 170mm deep from the top of the mating flange to the base. As in the picture.
I’m sorry but I can’t provide the measurement for the QP III engine as I forgot that mine has no sump pan on it! Hope that helps with your decision making.
What are you thinking of putting it in?…..!! :)

    have a great weekend everyone.

Just what the doctor ordered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You. I have the stock wet sump pan, so now I can compare.
I'm looking to transfer the QPIII front suspension clip and engine into my old 1951 Mercury! Same with the rear suspension. The stock QPIII arrangement locates the engine very far forward of the front "axle" centerline. This would put the water pump in the grill of the Mercury, with now room for the radiator! So am looking at the possibility of relocating the engine further rearward in the QPIII subframe. But the rear mounted R&P steering is in the way; thus the need for a much shallower pan.
I have all the QPIII parts, so why not use them?
Many, MANY Thanks for this info. RF.

Pleasure. I hope you find it fits in a straightforward fashion, although it may well be a world first in engine swaps if so!!!

    best. M

Thanks for all your help on this Mark. It appears that a dry sump pan is only about 2 1/2" different in height than the wet sump. I need almost 5" for an easy conversion. Back to the drawing table.
    Many thanks though! RF.

    Hi Again Mark,
This just in; just off the phone with Jacques who claims that the QPIII oil pan is a one-off; the Ghibli, or Bora pan will not simply bolt up. I was just looking for the easy way out of this problem. Especially since there's currently a Bora hulk available at the Rudi Klien "Junk Yard" auction today. But it's already over my limit.

    Thanks Again, RF.

Why the need for the old Maserati V8 on a Mercury restomod?
Put a nice modern crate motor in and get some Maserati scripted valve covers made. That's been done before.

I knew this question was going to come up! I bought my '51 Merc 4 door some 40+ years ago when I was 19. It's been my DD for many years, including my "kid" years. I've driven it to Bonneville for Speed Week, and it's part of the family.
Then I got my '61 3500 GT, which changed me. (that's a whole 'nuther story). I went from being a 50s style, hot rod flat head V8 guy, to a DOHC guy in an instant. Then I happen across this '80 QPIII. I've had it (all in parts) for years. Quatroporte translated to 4 door, and that's what my Merc is, complete with the rears being "suiside". Therefore, the need for a Mercurati, despite the Merc having a perfectly running FH V8 with OD. I have the parts, so I figured that I might as well?
Sorry for the book, but you asked!
