    Hey,

    From Autosport;

    It'll be interesting to hear the reaction from the teams......

    It makes for some *awesome* (single) laps but would it improve the sport? [Or the "show"? ;)] With a single supplier, my honest reaction is pretty much "so what?!" They're gonna go, say, 2-5 seconds quicker in qualy, then appear "slow" in race trim.

    I don't think they'll go for it.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

    This was brought up by another poster elsewhere, I think the compound thread: who decides what kind of tires are used? Pirelli or the FIA? I always thought FIA but from this article I understand that it's Pirelli? Or is it just a suggestion that still has to pass with FIA?

    Right now, Pirelli decides which 2 of the 4 compounds to bring - Their decision is based on the track surface, expected temps and so on. Nothing to do with the FIA.

    A return to qualy tires is, as you say, just a suggestion from Pirelli right now - It would need the approval of the teams - Specifically, the TWG. Again, any decision is not coming from the FIA.

    Cheers,
    Ian

    I'd rather see the FIA amend the rules to have a set number of tires for quali and another set for the race. At least to me, it makes no sense to see some teams/drivers not run quali to save one set for the race.

    So much for keeping costs low?

    Low cost & F1 is an oxymoron ;)

    However, in fairness, the only additional cost here would be to Pirelli - They'd need to bring a shed load more tires (which, IIRC, the teams get FOC).

    I guess that as long as these gumballs are available to *ALL* the teams it might work. But again, why bother?

    Cheers,
    Ian

    I still think that qualifying should represent the pace of the car+driver combination in the race itself.

    I think it's a good move, because qualifying is supposed to be the fastest driver on pole, and not some strategy game. I hope they bring back quali engines too :D

    The tyres should be the same. Just give them more sets.

    Simple.

    But with quali tyres it does add up to the same thing, doesn't it. Now it means they don't have to save tyres for raceday.

    Hmmm no :eek:

    The costs to make more of the same tyres over the cost of developing a new tyre just for qual is completely different :eek:

    Making the cars 2-3secs a lap doesn't improve the show. We want to see tight battles for Pole not faster lap times.

    We also don't want drivers that made it to Q3 disadvantaged or not bothering to post a time just to save tyres.

    Indeed, but it does appear Pirelli are willing to do that if the teams want to.....

    I want both! :) [Actually, I want it tight all the way down the grid..... ;)]

    +1 IIRC, Hembery was (is?) pissed about that - They "force" 'em to use 'em on Friday (you gotta give 'em back), do the same on Saturday, damnit! And give 'em more sets!

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Hey,

    It turns out "our" belief that they're running out of tires is incorrect! :eek:

    From Autosport, edited for brevity;

    Dunno why the teams are against this?....

    Interesting, huh?......

    Cheers,
    Ian

    I'd rather have a special race tire that made them faster. Kinda like what the supersofts are now, but with an even bigger differential.

    Putting this one to bed;

    I could be wrong, but my reading suggests the teams simply didn't want qualy tires.....
