Most folks over here reached this same conclusion 20 years ago with these cars. But if you can tinker yourself and have the time and place to do the work then it's a labor of enthusiasm.

This is a very big car and there's lots to take car of except that engine should run for 100K miles if properly taken care of. But most were not, just like the Biturbo they go from owner to the next with ever decreasing service levels. Or they sit for a long time with the first or second owner.

    Just ask Joedro.

And ... the piper WILL be paid!

    Hello Quattroporte3...

I would be very interested in your videos and photos... Please leave the chatter in, I
think it will add to the interest, especially if you used a few 4-letter words..:) My ultra-
sonic cleaner arrived yesterday.. Am now researching proper solutions to use for
cleaning the carbs in it.. Like you, I will soak my carbs in carb cleaner first to remove most of the major goo, and then fine clean them with the ultrasonic cleaner..

Ok, let me see what I can arrange in this pre-Christmas rush. No 4 letter words, mostly just "there's a thingy, I wonder what it does. Something or other. Let's unscrew it and look!" ;-)

One thing I can offer, is that it's actually helpful doing 4 of them. With the transmission there was a lot to remember, and it was all first time stuff. The work stretched over months, which made it harder to remember.

With the carbs, dismantling the first one with video/pics took some time, but with each one I became more familiar with the way it's built and all the subsystems, jets, valves, etc. I still don't understand a whole lot of how it works, but much more than before. Most of the stuff is screws to fasten things in place, other than that there aren't really a whole lot of parts.

Hope to get the ultrasonic cleaning done by the weekend, been delayed a bit.

Agree Bob, if taken care of both Biturbo's and QP3's can be reliable.
Everybody told med when I bought my 2.24v that I would spend more time in the workshop than on the road. That never happened and the car has been very good to me.

For me owning cars like this, I need to be able to do most of the work myself.
And if I run into problems that will take time to fix, I buy an old banger to drive around in for a couple months.

Bill McGrath certainly know what they are doing, but they do charge for it.
I could never base my car ownership on using workshops like that.

Purchased a QP3 that, 'only needed a carb rebuild'. Starter melted, fuel feed nonexistent and after that. Engine bad. Answer, tough

    Carbs are almost back together.

The overhaul kit doesn't include choke cover gasket or fiber washers for the inlet pipes. To be fair, not all Webers in QP3s have separate inlet pipes, some are cast directly into the top (where the fuel line connects).

Managed to lose (arrrgggghhhh) a few parts that I can't continue without, 3 bearing covers and shims/spacers that keep them centered. I have no idea how that happened as I've been super careful and counted the number of parts into and out of each ziplock baggie as it went from carb cleaner to ultrasonic bath and back. Worst possible time too, I needed the car ready by Friday. Oh well.

The good news is that despite the great number of parts (can't post more pictures, but imagine a kitchen table full of tiny little bits of metal), the job itself has so far proven to be quite straightforward. It's all pretty simple, things are designed so that they only fit where they're supposed to.

I also noticed that my main mixture needle screws are warped and bent. I don't know if that's how they come, or how in the world they got that way. They do seem to seat ok, so I don't know. Since I'll have to order a few parts anyway, I may just go ahead and get these too.

Glad to hear about the carbs, the job isn't as bad as one thinks.

Got myself a bit of a wheel bearing noise, left front.
Will need to change that before it gets much worse.

Joe or MIE the best sources for this?

The job looks pretty straight forward according to the drawings on Eurospares.
    Anyone has some insights?

Let me go out on a limb (again) and say publicly that my experience with parts from Joedro has been less than stellar. While he gives good advice, the parts are often described as being in much better condition than they arrive, and in some cases are simply not usable at all.

I would recommend getting pictures, etc. AFAIK he only sells used parts he's pulled off of other cars, so I don't think you'd want to go there for bearings!

When I did my bearings last year I bought them from MIE.

There's also a guy on eBay that sometimes has ok deals, I think his seller name is Maseratiresource or similar.

    Good luck!

Seems Joe has a complete set new in a box for a good price.
Will email with him to check that it is new for sure.
Or else MIE will get my order.

    Thanks for the tip!

I have read the negative comments, so know the risks.
Not a good business idea selling crap parts or cars, you will eventually run out of customers.

Hmmm. Ok pictures are generic and not what you are buying. Sometimes what you get is a broken example - useful if you need a core for exchange. However, only place for some parts. He was able to give me a bunch of stuff. I ordered a window etc which arrived broken and I did get some parts in "exchange". I am glad he is breaking some cars BUT you must take a lot of care. In one case I ordered the more expensive rear lights that were described as perfect and got the ones picture on a cheaper posting - no recourse.

Anyone happen to have one of these?

    40 DCNF Diagram

    part number 42, "spacer bush".

I need only one, but am not adverse to having a spare or two. It almost seems like something that wouldn't be too hard to fabricate, if I could find a brass washer of the same approximate size...

I just adjusted the microswitch that I forgot to do after the carburetor rebuilds. Now I can hear the "electric valve" click on/off when I step on the gas pedal. I've had the car for several years now and I've never heard that before so I'm guessing the Vacuum Advance was always "on" during idle.
Other than now hearing the click I notice no difference.

The bummer about this is I used the colortune while the vacuum advance was operating. Maybe I'll redo that step. It wasn't very hard to do anyway.

Is that an advance or retard? I ask because on the Bora (same carbs & ignition but thermal reactors instead of cats) it's a vacuum retard unit. There's a valve (operated by the switch) that connects the engine's vacuum source only present at idle to the retard unit.

I shouldn't think that would affect your colortune results either way.

I don't know if its advance or retard. It's a 1979 euro version without cats if that means anything. I'm just learning here. I haven't looked in the books yet.

I'd take a look in the service manual in that case. On my Bora the retard smooths out the idle quite a bit as it retards the ignition but then you get that off idle lunge and ultimately it makes the car slower on acceleration.

I just went through the service manual looking for it, but as far as I can tell it isn't mentioned. Not under Fuel system, electrical system or anti-pollution system at least.
