I think you need to rotate them before you post them. Although I noticed that Bob had rotated a pic someone else had posted in a separate thread. Not sure how he did that, maybe he has super-powers?

Where exactly is it that's seized?

First - thanks to bundas for kicking me over here from ************. I have a 1984 QP, currently backup transportation in case my other car ('85 Biturbo) lets me down. I've been reading this for a while but this is my first post - first QP too. 104K, good driver (so far) with a little rust.

Symptom: car won't idle without a little choke. Engine starts quickly & runs well except for a rare part-throttle stumble. No smoke, plugs are light brown, sounds great. I have checked floats, mix screws and cleaned jets, e-tubes, filters and bowls. Carbs have new kits and tank has new fuel.

Does anyone know how the switch on the distributor and the switch under the passenger side of the carb pan affect the idle? Do they affect idle at all? I don't see them in my service/ parts books.

If this answer is somewhere else in the thread I'll stop wasting everyone's time. Thanks all!

    First of all, welcome! :)

    Nice choice of rides.

Not idling without choke sounds like fuel delivery or air fuel mixture. The choke engages additional fuel delivery through a completely separate path from the main jets. My car starts, idles & runs fine without any choke at all, even mid-winter.

What exactly do you mean by part-throttle stumble? The car stumbles on acceleration now and then? At all speeds/rpms and all gears, or only from a standing start?

How about trying the "emergency" fuel pump and see if the problem stays. Maybe your fuel pump is not delivering enough flow. I'd also check your fuel filer(s) to make sure they are clean and that the regulator is delivering between 2.5-3 pressure to the carbs. They have a tendency to rust internally, and there's no easy way to verify pressure. I've installed a pressure gauge inline between the regulator/filter and the carbs.

The microswitch under carb no. 1 is described in the manual, but it's hard to find the reference. It controls a solenoid (close to the firewall on the driver's side) that connects to the vacuum port of the distributor. Note that the distributor vacuum here *retards* the timing, there is no vacuum advance, only centrifugal. The amount of retard is about 10 degrees or so I think (from memory). It's a basically a primitive way to reduce emissions at idle, because as soon as you step on the gas it's deactivated and the timing advances.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of mileage do you see?

Asking questions is never a waste of time.

    Hello Michael...

If you don't mind my asking, where in New England? I have family up in MA/CT
and sometimes get up that way. I also have an '85 Biturbo
plus an '82 QPIII.. The Biturbo was my daily driver back in the late 1980's.
Loved the car! The QPIII, and unfortunately now the Biturbo, are both projects!

    Welcome to the group!

    Mike

Thank you guys very much - diagnosis continues.

    Quattroporte3:

Part-throttle stumble from a standstill and at lower speeds, but above ~25 it pulls without a problem. For the moment I've substituted the stock regulator for one with a gauge that I trust set to 3 psi. Filters are new & clean.

I'm getting between 9-10mpg driving mostly on rural roads between 40-60mph with occasional highway use. Since the manual states the combined MPG at 9, I figured I'm doing OK. Once upon a time Road & Track reviewed one of these as the "thirstiest car in the US". If anyone has that article I would love to read it again.

OK the microswitch works a little like the vacuum retard on the Biturbo so that I understand - doesn't seem like it would kill the engine if it stopped working.

    Mexico074:
I'm in northeast CT near Worcester MA. I've only been here for about a year (transplant from the DC area) but it's great so far- you never know what will turn up at a show, saw my first Mazda REPU this year! I'm actually looking for a good fab shop up here too. Drop me a line when you're local; I'm usually looking for an excuse to drink a beer anyway.

Made a little head way with my rear end. but ran into some problems. the pin that holds the hub onto the lower rear suspension arm was frozen. I've heated, soaked, beaten the daylights out of it and finally was forced to use the saw. well its apart now, but i'm in need of another pin. on the bright side, caliper rebuild went well, brake rotors are turned and look good, replaced pinion seal, drained and cleaned out differential. waiting on a new axle shaft u joint from MIE, and should be ready to assemble.

I'll start with the good stuff, received pin from Mitchell. Many thanks. Hub bearings disassembled and repacked. Frame cleaned up, primed and painted. Then....I started to assemble the side that gave me all the trouble at disassembly and ran into this (see picture). I might have used too much pressure:). Pin holes do not line up. Sooo, i will take it apart again use some persuasion to get it back in line. I am also working on plan B, in case...

    Ouch.

Maybe some gentle persuasion from a press could help line up those holes along a common axis...? No wonder you couldn't get the old pin out!

Let us know how it goes.

    Hi Nick...

Ouch is right per Quattroporte3!!! What do you think the problem is? Is the arm
through which the pin goes to short (bad part), or is it bent such that it is not
at 90 degree angle, or is the whole L shaped piece bent at the main tube?
And of course, what is plan B?

Mike, the arm got a little bent when i was forcibly trying to squeeze out the rusted old pin. So a combination of rust and not aligning, certainly wasn't a good recipe for getting the old one to slide out. Or the new one to get back in there.

But with some gentle persuasion, and some Barry White on the radio, i managed to get the two to play nice. I thoroughly checked for stress cracks, none to be found. Clean it up again, slap some paint on it, and see what hurdle i will run into next...

I think my brother in the picture needs to go to the bathroom:)

I'm just about ready to slide this thing back under car. Still need to remake 2 brake lines from caliper to bleeder screws. The ones i already made, are too short. Already returned flaring tools to friend. So close to getting in wrapped up tonight. Will get after it on Sunday, Family is visiting friends this weekend, gives me lotsa time to wrench.

Well, got it all together today, only to find more problems. Slid the assembly under car and connected brake line to test for leaks before i tucked up in there, and found two leaks. Glad i checked. After that it was fairly straight forward. reverse of disassembly. Tightening the axle nuts is a mother. And on the maiden voyage everything worked as it should, car stops, shocks work well, bearings are quiet and on my way home I was greeted by a cloud of white smoke coming from passenger side exhaust. No lie, barely got a mile down the road. Limped back to the garage. I am assuming the head gasket went. Will find out when i tear into it. Joy:(
