Quattroporte reliability?

    A buddy of mine just called and was concerned about the reliability of the Quattroporte. He is looking to buy new next week but heard there were issues. Being a F-car owner myself, I understand the quirks with these Italian automobiles. However, I don't have any knowledge regarding the QP. Can anyone let me know what counsel you would give my friend? What issues are common? Is the reliability good or marginal?

    Hey Scott, I have 28,500 miles on my 2005 QP, including a lot of hard miles. So far I've never have been stranded and have had only one repair required and was taken care of under warrantyat one of the maintenance interval dealer visits. I have gone thru tires like crazy.

    Coolest car I've ever owned (out of a lot of cool cars)

    Any myths out there that should be debunked? Other opinions? I love them, may end up with one at the end of the year when it is time to get rid of the Mercedes.

    Works for maserati for almost 10 years.I think this is the "perfect" car Maserati Spa ever built.Somes warning light/electrical problems - but it still can rectified.Engine by Ferrari,it's look reliable-so far.

    Here are some thoughts: The navigation system sucks.
    The gear box is wonderful (at least in my opinion). Just drive in in Manual and forget there is even a psuedo-Auto mode.
    The car grows on its owner like no other. Better after a year than when new.
    The car is a driver's car. Passenger-wise there are probably better road cars.
    The seat massager and the related "reshaper" feature is GIPE (Good Idea, Poor Execution)
    Its an involving car, you drive it, you are never a "passenger in the driver's seat. Depending on what the driver wants from a car this can be good or bad. For me its great, for some people a the isolation and silence of a Lexus may be more attractive.

    Its very hard for the "gestalt" of this car to come thru in a test drive; I've been continually surprised at how positive most reviews are for this reason. After a month you begin to merge with the car. After a few months nobody can pry the thing from you.

    Its a seductive machine, more of an adventure than its more raw Ferrari cousins. Much better to think of it though as a luxury Ferrari than a sporty 7 Series, S500, Jag, A8 or whatever.

    I think that about covers it for my thoughts. We've had ours for 14 months, put about 15,000 miles on it, with some pretty hard driving and lots of long distance cruising. Never been stranded, only repairs have been small little stuff. It's an awesome car, adn only thing that gets me out of it, is the 612, which fits me better, and makes even better noises. :)

    This is exactly the feedback I was looking for. Sounds like a car for me but maybe not for my friend's wife. She is comming out of a Mercedes CL500. Nothing like the rawness you describe. I will pass on the information. Again, thank you very much.

    Scott, all I know is that Ferrari of Houston sold 40 Q-Ports last year. Last I heard all of them were still running.

    It might be a bit edgier than a MB, for which all I can say is... good.

    i understand driven like a manual it is fantastic but auto ouch.... large sedan segment really seems to be tough. $7500 rebate on an a8, my friend was quoted $20 or 25k off on a new 05 S class. mercedes was so filled with cars they offered each employee 3 friends and family discounts per employee -discount was 12% off sticker. poor maybach has a $75k rebate- talk about dead in the water.

    we have had our qp for almost a year with no major mechanical problems. my wife drives it everyday and hasn't been stranded yet. the only thing i dislike is the weak parking brake. be careful parking on an incline and starting the car to warm up. it might move on you.

    Get the car. I had a minor electric problem when I first received the car, and the vehicle is incredible. I recently purchased a Mercedes E55 wagon for my wife which is faster, has more gadgets, etc., but I still choose to drive the QP when the option to drive either is available. Maserati & Ferrari recognize that "it's an Italian car" just isn't going to cut it anymore when it comes to reliability if they wish to remain in business and they have delivered.

    Working with the QP for 4mo now, I've been impressed. The car has had some growing pains, or teething problems, minor things you see on all cars in the first year of a car..

    For 2006 I thought the transmission's shifting in Auto was improved, altough I think you're missing the whole point of this car if you're driving it in Auto mod. Auto mod is only there so that the non-stick drivers in the family won't.

    One issue that has to do with premature wearing or failure of the clutches is driver related. I try to explain to people that the car needs to be driven more in the manner that you would a manual than an automatic. What I catch a lot of owners doing is holding the car on a hill with the motor. In this sceneario they are at a stop light/intersection that's on a slight incline. The Maserati's and Ferrari's will want to roll backwards. Instead of standing on the brake while they are waiting, they feather the throttle gently to hold the car there. In effect slipping the clutch to the point of it over heating. Invariably they come in around 10K miles complaining of shifting problems or clutch problems, on inspection the clutch visibaly discolored or leapard spotted from the misuse.

    It isn't the hard driving that wears this car, I think the day to day driving by people that are too shy with the gas pedal or drive it like it's torque converter automatic is what is doing the cars and transmissions in.

    The best approach I found is to tell people not to drive the car like a manual or like an auto, but to approach it as whole new kind of transmission that requires some different techniques.

    I am still surprised at how many people I hear complaining about thier MBZ reliabilty. You never heard anything like this 10years ago.
