My Dad has a 1972 Ghibli SS which has been undergoing engine repairs for 10 years. (No; that is not a typo.) I have a line on a 1980 (or thereabouts) Quattroporte complete car for much less that the rebuild completion estimate.
Question: while the Ghibli is a carb car and almost entirely pre-emissions and the QP is FI and emissions set, how much trouble would it be to put in ther QP motor? It is the same 4.9 litre V 8 and should bolt right in, no?
    Thanks for your help!

The QP is wet sump while the Ghibli is dry sump. QP is most likely automatic tranny which will require modifications to fit the ZF manual gearbox.

BTW: QP is carbs not FI

No engine should take this long to rebuild. Change mechanic and fix the proper Ghibli engine; and do not got any other route. Just my 2 cents.

Pretty similar but not exactly a "bolt in".

    Ghibli has a dry-sump, Q-porte has a wet-sump.

    Other internal differences as well.

You could probably make it work (anything's possible) but I doubt you'd save much money doing it. Ghiblis are finally starting to appreciate in value. It will be worth more in it's original configuration.

Maseratis are ridiculously expensive to restore (even compared to Ferraris), The End.

I have looked into doing this conversion, it would require a piece to be made on the rear bell housing, using the Ghibli oil pan and oil pump housing i believe it would work. A late Ghibli oil pan will fit on the Quattroporte 3 block (dowel pins are slightly larger). If your Ghibli engine is usable i would rebuild it but this conversion is workable. I rebuild these engines regularly. Dan 760-363-7448
