Le grandi Ferrari F1 1/24th number 5. Rain tires and different rear wind along with Gilles as the driver. The Ferrari 1/24th models all have plastic cases.

When I started the scale model hobby as a young teenager it was primarily about 1/24 models (mostly Bburago and a few kits my brother built). Then I went on to 1/43 and now 1/18 scale. The quality however of these recent ready built 1/24 models is such that I would exchange my 1/18 scale collection for these kind of models in a heartbeat.
I think 1/24 is the sweet spot in size and detail for building a collection. Let's see if the world of 1/24 ready built models will expand further.

Agree that 1/24th is a nice scale. Not to small like 1/43rd and not too bulky like 1/18th. I think 1/32nd would have been good enough for detail but I like the size of 1/24th better. 1/43rd is just not detailed enough most of the time, although they have some amazing modelers doing some amazing 1/43rd models. I have a 1/43rd collection also because you can get everything in 1/43rd. 1/12th for special cars only.

Could 1/24th be the new 1/43rd?? If IXO Hachette has it's way it might be, but mainly in Europe/Asia as North America seems to like bigger 1/18th diecasts best, other than me :).

I love 1/18th scale but you run out of shelf space very quickly. I agree that 1/43rd doesn't quite have the level of detail as a larger scale but does have the space factor.

1/24th is a much better scale overall. When I was growing up 1/24th was normally the domain of US model makers such as Revell.

Tamiya made a die cast series of F1 models back in the early 1990's in 1/20th scale. which I always though was the sweet spot for scale model sizing.

I guess that size never really took off internationally which I felt was an opportunity lost.

I've been checking on some diecast forums, and there is often a rant: "why is this f*** Bbburago [or whatever else] spend its resources on those 1/24 toys for kids and not make a proper 1/18 cars for true collectors. they should abandon this toy 1/24 scale...".
Seriously, that's the attitude: 1/18 and 1/43 are "true collectors" scales, and 1/24 are rubish toys o_O

For me scale is one of the most important factors - I want to have cars in the same scale, so I can put them aside and compare.
Like Ferrari Roma and F12 - I was amazed, that the former is bigger. My first thought was "oh, no! Bburago has f*** the scale again!". But no, I've checked technical specs and it really is bigger. Or to find out, that 1988 grup A Ford Sierra isn't bigger than 2008 Focus WRC...

These little discoveries are important to me, and this is why I am not into multi scale collections.

And 1/24 has some big advantages for me: wide range of Ferrari, WRC and F1 cars avaliable, pretty decent quality-to-price ratio, and more compact size.

I hear that also about 1/24th. Funny thing is 1/18th was the "toy " scale and 1/24th almost all model kits starting back in the 1950's. Things are changing. Not sure if 1/24th will take off more but IXO seems to be doing pretty well.

Like I said, I have a 1/43rd collection due to the amount available and also 1/24th and 1/12th. Never really understood 1/20th until Motoi from Costa Mesa CA told me it was due to the batteries in the Tamiya P34 F1 model. The Tamiya F1 models were all motorized and the batteries would not fit in the model in 1/24th scale so they made the model bigger for the batteries.

By the way, the engineer at Tamiya back in the 1970's who told Motoi that story is now the owner of Ebro.

These are the Tamiya models I was referring to.
The Collectors Club series, no batteries.
Die cast models made to the same scale as their plastic kits.
I have the full collection, I think they made 5 or so versions from memory including the McLaren driven by Senna and the Benneton with Schumacher.

    I love the Lotus!

If Hachete/IXO would release series of all 90's F1 cars one day.... I guess I'd have to sell my kidney :D

(Just as an FYI. Those are not my specific models in the photo, the last two are quite sun damaged as shown by the yellowing of the stickers)

I had wished back in the day that 1/32 had taken off as the popular scale, since it would have been the ideal scale to build a large collection in. Airfix and Monogram made some nice racing car kits in the scale, but few others followed.

True as I agree it would have been big enough for good detail. I think the huge amount of promo American 1/25th models and 1/24th international models had already made the decision way back in the 1960's.

Then along came 1/18th. I think Tamiya 1/18th ( I really don't love Tamiya because of the "new" mainstream scales they keep starting up, 1/20th F1, 1/48th tanks) kits again along with BBurago 1/18th diecasts were the two mainstream drivers back in the 1970's.

By the way, look at the suspension pick up points on this 1/24th Ferrari . They are so much better than the old Revell 1/24th F1 kits. Best example of how not to engineer F1 suspension to body pick up points goes to Revell Germany!!

Yes, very nice. But after more than 30 years, you can expect progress. There are collectors, and there are modelers. I am both. Anyway, I will not throw my old built Revell and Hasegawa in the trash, and I am not going to buy this die-cast.

Understood. I like to replace my models if I find a much better one. That being said this new F1 89 is not at first look as good as the old Hasegawa plastic model from 1990. I will buy one to compare. These mostly very good IXO/Hachette 1/24th F1 models are not as good as the old Rosso 1/24th models but on a few occasions are better than the resin Wave kits. Example the Lotus 79. I think the IXO model is better, wich says alot. 30 years ago they knew how to make superb models if they put effort into them just like now they can make garbage models with no effort. With the Revell Germany F1 kits it seems like they just did not care, although I do like a few of the Revell F1 kits.

Centauria from Italy newstand IXO Hachette 1/24th F1 coming models have an extension from 61 to 80. Some interesting cars and 8 more World Drivers champion cars. I like the extra odd cars such as the Arrows A2, Tyrell 011(I suspect Detroit) and Ligier JS 11. We also have 45 more of 60 Ferrari F1 1/24th models in the second Italian newstand series yet to be announced. That's alot of F1 Ferrari's in 1/24th scale!!

If you do not know how good the quality of these F1 models is you owe yourself a purchase of one. The last Brabham 1976 BT45 Martini model is stunning, although the real car was not very good.
By the way, Indycals and Pattos Place do make decals for alot of these cars in 1/24th scale if you want to change the race version. Decals and paint are almost perfect but extra decals are always handy to have.

Hachette IXO Newstand Italy Red Bull 2021 car in 1/24th scale. This looks like a Burago made model for the Hachette series, not IXO wich would have been better. Very ugly car anyway and he did not win this race.

Technically you can make 9 more World Driver champions with the latest 19 F1 cars if you convert the Moss Cooper to Brabham.

So far you can do 44 1/24th Driver Champion cars from this collection. The Ferrari collection will add the 1952, 1953, 1958, 1961, 1977 cars for a total of 49 cars so far in 1/24th scale.

I talked about the Driver Championship in 1/24th scale to IXO/Hachette(I really do not work for them) and they are receptive to the idea of completing the entire Drivers Championship model collection in 1/24th scale. What a great collection that will be!!! IXO 1/24th F1 models are around $35.00 to $40.00 US and sometimes less on ebay not including shipping. Newstand F1 1/24th models in Italy are 25 Euro + markup and shipping from dealers on ebay.
