Hello I found some pics of 308 GTB/GTS chassis. Is this similar to the 308 GT4 chassis? I can´t found any image of the GT4 chassis . thanks
If by "similar" you mean the same except for body mounting points and a few inches of extra tube between the wheels, then yes. Same suspension, same engine and transmission, same steering, etc.
thanks for reply. If I cut those few inches and except the mounting points, I have the same chassis? I will put those mounting points in the cut chassis and mount in it the body of 308 GTS? or 288 GTO? Thanks
Ha, that's funny, I wonder what the wheelbase of the GT4 is compared to the 288 GTO. So yes, I think you could do that, but it would be no easy afternoon feat. It would be far easier to start with the GTS chassis to put a GTS body on it. Even if the GT4 chassis was free, you'd be better off buying a GTS chassis. There's a bunch of front and rear end structural stuff. Plus the GTS has a bunch of extra bracing. The GT4 had a roof and that's important. I'd hate to have a GTS with even less stiffness, it would be hard to keep ahold of the steering wheel!
I had exactly the same idea about the GT4 chassis. Cutting the wheelbase from 2550 to 2340, enforcing the chassis to compensate for the missing roof strength and put a Dino 246 replica body in fiberglass on it. I have read about 308 gt4 tuned and with fiberglass panels to reduce weight, but I haven't found anyone with experience on shortening the wheelbase. Yes - I know cutting the wheelbase is a job for a laser precise bench, but to me it seems doable and would make an incredible Dino 246 replica. Maybe even better than the original? How would you expect the car to drive (with the shorter wheelbase) ? Has anyone done this? Any thoughts on the project? Found a damaged and rusty 308GT4 for low money that would cost more to rebuild as a GT4 than a "dino 308" but the engine is fine. Thanks in advance, Klaus
This is a bit like saying: "I've got a 308 GTB but I really want a GTS!, I know, all I need to do is cut the roof section out and hey presto!, I've got My GTS!" It's just not that simple! Although the concept of design and construction are the same, the actual chassis designs for the 308 GT4; GTB and GTS are all different, they are not easily interchangeable. I suspect it would be more expensive to modify a chassis to suit than it would be to get a poor condition/damaged car of the correct model and use it's chassis for the job.
I agree and i know - you can't just cut the roof off a coupe and expect the car to perform well. As i Wrote - I would reenforce the chassis to compensate for the missing stiffness in the roof. I don't think it's the biggest issue to calculate and weld the extra material. But i agree the roof can add a lot of stiffness to a chassis. So I would probably be very conservative about the reinforcement and add more strength to the chassis than calculated. I am thinking the extra weight of the reinforcement would easy be compensated by all the steel bodywork replaced by glass fiber - and lower the gravity point of the car. I read somewhere that the chassis and running parts of 308 gt4 and 308gtb are similar - except the wheelbase is shorter on the 308 gtb. How are the chassis between 308 GTB and GTS different? Anyone have a picture of a stripped frame? I am more worried about shortening the chassis and what that will do to the cars handling. My idea is to shorten the chassis right behind the doors of the GT4, so basically the engine moves closer to the centerlines of the car - can't be bad? Best regards, Klaus
Ferrari did. The GTB/S is shorter than the GT4. Yes. I think you are crazy. But don't let that stop you!
Some pics of both in this thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=333472 and, yes, you are insane
246&308 2340 mm 288 GTO 2450 mm 308 GT4 2550 mm Compared to a 308 the GTO has the extra length behind the passenger cabin, while I suspect the GT4 has the extra length in the cabin, it´s a 2+2.
