I know that if I wanted to claim an internet domain name, then all I have to do is go to one of the many registrars out there and plunk down their fee and the domain is mine - right ? I know to check for domain availability and the like (and yes, I know that all the "good" ones are already taken.)

My question though is this: Can I just claim a domain and pay my fee, and just sit on it for as long as I continue to pay the annual fee? If I don't throw up a simple webpage for this domain, what happens when someone tries to access it ? Will they get the usual '404 error ? Could I lose that domain somehow as long as I keep my registration current ?

Basically, yes, it's yours as long as you pay (aside from lawsuits, WIPO, etc)

While a domain is usually associated with a web page, that's certainly not the only reason that they are used. I have several that are just used for email and do not have websites associated with them.

If there is no www hostname defined, then a DNS error will be generated if you try to access www.(domain).com. If there is a hostname defined but no webserver, then your browser will generate a "cannot connect to host" type message

    Thanks for your insight Tillman,

    A couple of quick followups...

So I could presumably go to any registrar, claim my domain, ie., myname.com.

Now, imagine it's a year later and I have the time/resources/whatever to do something with this domain.

Can I work with any company that offers hosting services? Just because I used company "X" to do my registration doesn't mean I can't use company "Y" for hosting ?

Is there any downside to using a cheap registration company like 'godaddy.com' if that's all I want to do right now?

godaddy.com, 1and1.com, directnic.com - all varying prices, but I use them all because some have been stuck for years or some have been just transferred to me. estimate: $5.99 - $15 a year up to $35 a year from some. There's no difference really unless there is a serious problem with the name, which is a very rare problem and you will probably not experience at the fault of the registrar.

Yes, you can use any abc web host even if you registered thru xyz registrar.

I don't know if any registrar actually do this, but just make sure that there are no hidden fees for you to do basic things like redirecing your domain to your web host's servers etc.

    Thanks everyone.

Reason for the question is that I was thinking about claiming domains for my kids to have and make use of when they get older. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't making a dumb mistake if I did this before I had the time to really do anything with it besides stake my claim.
