On my 308QV I had to push the gear lever down before I could move the gear lever into the reverse position and to engage reverse. On my 1985 TR, I can engage reverse by either simply moving the gear lever into the reverse position or by pushing down the gear lever and putting moving it into the reverse position. I would think I would not be able to engage reverse unless I push down the gear lever first and then move the gear lever into the reverse position. Any input on this issue? Just want to make sure my car is working 100%. Just had an engine out service and never drove the car before the service.

    Thanks,
    Ken

    Maybe possible issues:

    1. The "blocker" tab on the underside of the shift gate is worn, or the square section on the gear shift lever that contacts it is worn, or

    2. The gear shift lever is stuck in the down (or partially down) position.

Have your ever inspected the underside of the shift gate?

Same here and I only found out about it a few weeks ago. Remember how I used to complain about how hard reverse was? Well there you have it, I wasn't pushing down

The plate is probably installed backwards. Look and see if the "blocker tab" is in fifth gear position.
