Hello FChat. I'm troubleshooting a fuel smell on my 06' 612. There is no direct evidence of fluid leak that I can see, but there is a strong smell of fuel near the left-side fuel pump. The right-side pump does not smell at all. I'm planning to use my smoke machine to help troubleshoot and hopefully find the leak. I plan on injecting the smoke into the fuel filler, using a cone-adapter. My machine has a regulator that limits smoke flow to 1.5 psi, so I should be good there. Is there anything specific I need to do to the EVAP system in order to get a good test? I don't want to vent the smoke to the atmosphere, which will degrade the test. I know that the 612 runs an active self-test on the EVAP system during certain conditions...do I need to command any valves closed with my Launch X431? Also, I have read suggestions that nitrogen should be used, and not "shop air". Is there any danger with using shop air? Just trying to get a good, thorough test result before doing the fuel tank removal. I appreciate the help. Thanks in advance...

If you are not getting a check engine lamp on with an EVAP error you likely have a leaking fuel pump lid where the fuel pressure regulator housing is. This will not show up on a smoke test and when the lids first crack you may not get a puddle but just enough to create a smell.. Otherwise the easiest way to smoke test is to remove the line at the charcoal canister that goes to the tank and leave the gas cap off. Fill the tank and system with smoke until it comes out the filler opening, then install the cap and pressurize the system and inspect the system for leaks.

I found leaks using a sniffer from amazon that I also use for Natural gas leaks - worked well on a 512tr to see where smell was coming from

Thanks, Windsock. The smell is absolutely coming from the immediate area of the left fuel pump. There is no puddling fuel, but that pump and the fuel output line have a "greasy" feel to it, which leaves a "fuel smell" on my fingers after touching it. Also, the left pump displays a slight "yellowing" discoloration. The right pump appears brand new and is colored "new white", if that makes any sense. I don't have any records to indicate that either fuel pump has ever been changed. I first noticed the smell about 4 days ago, so this is a very recent development. As you indicated, I have no CEL and no EVAP faults. It seems certain that the fuel pump is the issue, so I'll start planning that repair. Thanks again.

Thanks, Dominick. I'll give one of those tools a try.
