First I'd like to say, I mean absolutely no disrespect, I am in no way trying to be derogatory. I genuinely would like to get a perspective from owners who drive their car, to events, daily, or even only occasionally.

*What is your fuel economy with the V12 car? How do you feel about it?*

The EPA rates in town driving to 8mpg for the F550, and I'm sure most of you absolutely love to keep the RPM's up, so I imagine actualized results may be lower. I ask because the V12 Ferrari's have been a favorite of mine for quite some time, and have only recently discovered how much drag 12 sets of rings produces, and the holistic picture it paints for economy. So I'd like to get some first hand opinions. Is it bearable having to fill up constantly? Is this frowned upon by your peers, or is it something to be proud about - "I own a Ferrari, I can afford to blow through fuel!"? :)

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to field my question.

    Best Regards,
    -Paul

Anyway it's more fuel efficient to buy/own a used car than having a new fuel efficient car built...

I don't know a single Ferrari owner that worries about fuel mileage.

Looks, feel, performance are the most important aspects of an exotic car.

Fuel mileage is near dead last in the equation.

Normally 11-12 mpg (imperial) around country roads. Don't do any urban miles but suspect this would be under 10. Recent 2,000 mile trip to SW France, Alps & Germany allowed few averages to be calculated - none less than 17 mpg, best which included some country roads and several stretches 175 kph autobahn was 19.6 mpg. Up to 350 miles between fill ups

I love driving uphill in 2nd @ 5,000 + RPMs on one of my winding, country roads in my 575M.

    Awesome and exhilarating!!

Gas mileage? It does not matter. But probably at least 1 mpg.

I don't look at EPA estimates. I agree with the others, performance & great looks is what always made a Ferrari for me. Now, I have one and I am damn lucky to have one. So based on that, toss the fuel mileage out the window, buy one and have a "Ferrari Experience"!!! Time is too short to worry about MPG's !!!!

Fuel consumption is irrelevant when purchasing a Ferrari or any other exotic. If fuel consumption is a factor in your decision process for ownership then a Ferrari is not for you.

A Ferrari s tuned for performance not fuel economy.

As to what others may think of the fuel usage of my vehicles, I don't care, its my money and I'll spend it as I please.

Interesting, but also funny question. I have owned my 575 for 6 years and have never even thought about it. I can only assume the differences are drastic between a run to the grocery store (as I often do) or a run out on some twisties. I read somewhere that one of these cars run at total full out will drain a tank in thirty miles or so. Not sure if that is even remotely true, but I can assure you a spirited run in the triple digits will make you stop and refill before you know what happened, but puttering around town and running errands will be as good as my Range Rover. I guess the only way to tell is to monitor it for a few tanks, but again, the different driving styles are so drastic it would only be an educated guess. I, for one, do not have the patience to try and figure it out.

On a somewhat humous side note, as I am writing this, I am not even sure how much the tank holds. I did at one time as I read the owners manual cover to cover about 5 times when I bought the car, but have long forgotten fuel capacity. I can surely take a peek at the book in the garage in about 2 seconds, but that would be no fun. I am going to guess 26-28 US gallons? Am I close?

The funniest thing about my stable of cars, out of all the Rovers I own and the other rides, my 911 gets the best gas milage :)

As for the other question posed by the OP, it has never even come up in discussion with other people. Not any badge of honor or whatnot. This is the first time I have ever thought about it. Thanks, now you got me thinking, I guess I need to sell it now and buy a Prius.

Edit: curiosity got the best of me, so I checked 27.7 US gallons

Don't usually think about the price of gas for my 550. Hell, our family van gets worse mileage dragging its 2 ton butt up and down the mountain where I live. But I do feel a bit bad about my CO2 emissions, so I've tried to offset my Ferrari's carbon footprint by buying a Fiat 500 Abarth (3 pedal car and in a 695 Tributo Ferrari livery, naturally!). Fun as hell to drive, and gets a gazillion miles per gallon. I also always give way to folks driving hybrids and Teslas, as my way of thanking them for offsetting my footprint. Probably doesn't really compensate but I feel better. :)

when I fill up and leave the pump, if you asked how much did it cost you? I could not tell you.

DAMN 17mpg? That is way better than my Rover! I would have never guessed. You look like it was a highway run with little sitting time. My guess on my 575 is about 12/8 Highway/city, excluding serious triple digit runs, but that is only a 6 year educated guess. I have never tried to figure it out. I have never even put any real thought in it. My Rover gets 23-25 tops highway, but trip computer averages about 15 combined. If you really punch these 575s for a full afternoon, I would guess around 6pmg, but that is really exercising it. As I drive my 575 all over town, I usually fill/top off at a place I know that sells gas cheap on the other side of town near the courthouse. I never get below 1/4 tank, so figuring out gas milage is next to impossible. What type Garmin is that? that looks cool!

Hey Fou, Just got it, and it is cool !

You can talk to it and it will find anything from Starbucks to Shell station etc.

would have never had any idea of all that info without it.

I had it hard wired in... drivers side lower left, great place because you can see it very easily, keep track of your speed and it's right on the money.

    cheers,

Humm :) going to take a looksee at it. Where do you buy something like that? Car stereo shops? Did they have to mess with the interior or anything? It would be interesting to see that info sometimes. Is that something that i could have wired to the Porsche and the Ferrari then just carry it with me like an iPod between cars? Can you post a picture of how you have it installed?

One other question: how far off is your speedo reading vs that thing? I know we have discussed this before in this section, but often I am reading 80 in a 70 and get passed by small cars I know damn well are not going that fast. We have discussed the 10 percent rule, but just curious.

It's a Garmin Ecoroute HD. It plugs into the cars OBDII port. It isn't mounted. You could install it yourself..

I suppose my response echoes most of the others; fuel economy is just not something you think about when driving your 550/575. I suppose we all have other cars, perhaps we think more about mpg related to those vehicles....I think about mpg when I fuel up my F350 diesel, because it costs me $100 and that does not come close to filling the tank! Offsetting that, the readout tells me I can go 585 miles to the next fill up....Yet I don't think any/many of us are into raping the planet....more as your screen name suggests: horses for courses (as long as it starts @ 500!)

sorry no picture, I could not stand to watch so went to lunch with the service manager !

When we got back it was all done, yes you can move it from one car to the another, you just buy one of these so you can put one in each car.

Forgot to say you can buy it from Amazon.

Being an engineer, I admit that I was interested in the mileage my 550 could achieve in normal daily driving. I put about 2300 miles on it in eight weeks and kept track of the fuel consumed and the distance driven by the trip odometer and GPS. There's probably some error in the fuel measurements and the trip odometer, but it essentially came out at 11 mpg in pure city driving and around 20-21 mpg on longer highway trips (~250 miles @ ~75 mph). I didn't engage in any short-shifting or reduced speed/throttle tricks; I just drove it as I normally drive my Lexus.

I was mainly interested in the testing because of the very low MPG figures reported by Car & Driver. IIRC they reported 8/13, which indicates that they were likely driving at higher rates of acceleration than I normally use, i.e. they drove it like it was someone else's car.

Incidentally, my speedometer seems to be a little more accurate than what others have posted, too. It never reads over (by EU law, if I recall correctly), but it read 80 mph at a GPS-reported 78 mph on two separate devices.

I've gotten close to 19 mpg on a trip from SF to Portland. However, one reason that mileage isn't a major issue for individuals or the planet is that these cars are not only few in number; they are driven far fewer miles per year on average than other cars, usually under 3,000.

That is cool, yet my 964 predates the OBD II. I guess that is the price you pay to be air cooled with bug eyed classic lines. Damn, technology has come so far so quick, it is scary for us old farts.

Very interesting, thank you for posting that. I was not aware of the Car and Driver results, I was just guessing on my years of experience with the 575. Like I posted earlier, my guess would be close to my Rover under normal (Lexus) driving highway, but we all know we do not do that sometimes ;). the electronic bars of the 575 also distort things as they are a little confusing as well. If you 550 guys do not know, the 575s have bars that do fuel capacity rather than the needle. Not even sure what one bar of fuel means. hehehe By the way Soren, I hope you are not one of those Yankee Reconstructionist, I went to undergrad in Charleston and law school in Richmond. We beat up you people...hehehehe

I admire you for driving 2K over 2 months, that is what these cars need. I am at 29K now and loved every minute of it. Keeping them in the garage is a crime.

you mean it will plug in the Porsche Hammer? that is in the passenger footwell. Now, does this read off the engine, thus a possible error, or does it use GPS as I thought was necessary?
