On saturday i was running late but was almost on empty (Computer said i had less 10 miles to go), so i stop by a BP station and run inside to ask the attendant to put 50$ of gas on my card. He was being taught how to run CCs and basically just learning his job so there was a huge queue as it took him forever to do the basic cashier work. Anyway, i go to my car and start filling when the pump stops at $15. The guy understood 15 and said i would have to wait in line all over again which i couldnt as i was already late. So $15 is basically 4 gallons.

I figured it was enough to drive 20 miles and back without worrying. But when i turn the car back on, the gauge is still en Empty and the computer still says 10 miles. I drive off thinking it will adjust but it doesnt so 8 miles later i stop to refuel again.

What happened ? Is it normal ? 4 gallons should be 25% of my tank !

You have a reserve component in the gas that is not measured on the guage. You must have been really close to being truly empty.

also, the low fuel light comes on ridiculously early on that car...usually with 50 miles or more in range (which is around 3 gallons if you get 18 mpg like I do...)

so if you were truly "running on fumes"/reserve, it is possible that 4 gallons wasn't enough to override the low fuel warnings.

Is that particular to Porsche ? Do you know how much is the minimum so that the reserver light goes off ?

    Haven't read your owner's manual yet Andrew ? ;)

It is in there somwhere......IIRC about 15 litres is the reserve. Pretty much all manufacturer's have a reserve built in.

My problem is that with the California shutoff Valves due to the Emission Regulations, it is a pain to fill it up all the way without it stopping and having to click in the last gallon or two.

How I get around that is to squeeze the gas pump handle at about 50% the required force and use the slower fuel flow to top it off when near the end.

To fuel the 997 at full speed, you must "clock" the handle of the fueling device to 2 o'clock. It will fill quickly and without burping at the end. CGT is the same way.

That's what I found too. Otherwise on mine it actually short fills by about an 1/8 of a tank.
