Today I tried to start jogging again since it was a little *above* freezing... I got about 1/4 mile and it felt like I got punched in the throat it burned so bad. What causes that? Is it just cold air along your trachea or something?

I just ended up walking for a while; people were running by me though - I was wondering if it was just a beginner's thing and the burn goes away...

Before I turned into a lazy fat ass I was a avid runner and I had the same problem when running during the cold. You just work through it and keep on running. At least that's what I did.

Make sure you are breathing through your nose.

On really cold evenings I keep the collar on my training suit up around my nose and mouth. After running for awhile and getting fully warmed up, the cold doesn't bother me anymore.

When I jog in the cold, I get some serious pain in my middle or inner ear. Not so much during the jog, but more so afterwards. My ex-wife said she experiences the same thing. Throat never hurts though.

It's not asthma, guys. I used to have high school P.E in the early mornings, and it would happen to eveybody. It's like frostbite. The tissue in your trachea gets really cold and causes pain. It's like when you plunge your bare hand into ice. same thing.

Jogging should never be done in a climate with tempratures above or below freezing.
