So ive been trying to get my town to let me build a garage for a little while now. I also brought up the idea of buying one of those premade barn things and insulting it and heating/cooling it. If i buy a ferrari (348) what do you think about getting an ourdoor cover and leaving it outside for the summer/part of the winter? I know its def not reccoemended, but do you guys have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

With a Ferrari outside, it is asking for trouble. You might be able to do it for a while but once people get wind that you have a Ferrari outside, the results could be disastrous. Especially teens late at night. That could be the worst. I would not recommend it, no matter how good the area is unless I have an acre of property with a long driveway away from everyone else.

Ferrari outside? Not good. Ferraris melt when exposed to too much moisture. Ask Rehan what happened when his 550 got wet. Now he reluctantly drives a Lambo. Yep, he shoulda known better.

So I should get a lambo? What happens to the ferrari, does it melt like the witch in wizzard of oz? That could actually be pretty cool. Even a good outdoor cover cant protect it for a couple of months while I find it an enclosed home?

Don't listen to the wusses. If I didn't have a garage, I'd still own a Ferrari. Its a nice car and all, but its just a car.

Hey, you'd park your $100k Porsche, Mercedes or BMW outside, wouldn't you?

agreed. Not the best to leave it out but it's a car at the end of the day. Just hit up the car wash more often

I could be wrong....but isn't, say, a 355 going to rust A LOT faster than a $100k MB that is left outside?

Yeah, plus i am thinking of buying a 348. It would really only be for 4-5 months while I got a permit for a garage. It would also be over the summer months and not the winter, with a proper outdoor cover.

Um, the 348 engine is basically exposed to the elements. Getting wet isn't a problem. Staying wet however, will certainly cause gremlins to appear.

    Also, Ferraris leak. They do.

Instead of a cover do you think that you could get away with one of those fabric temporary "garages" that are basically a 10 X 20 tent with a peaked roof, straight sides and a zip up door at one end? They don't take up much more room than the car itself and so should fit pretty much anywhere. If the town complains, it is easy to take down for the inspector and then put back up in the middle of the night!

With the tent, you don't have to worry about putting the cover on if the car is wet or dirty, both of which are pretty bad for the paint.

yeah one of those tents could work! I am looking into a couple of options. Ideally I think I could get away with one of those prebuilt barns and then insulate it and put up sheet rock inside.

I have parked the porsche outside, as well as the f-cars. Summers only, never during the winter, never under snow.

Only the 308 leaked, but i think the leaks inside were dwarfed by the leak of fluids all over my driveway. (Many said it didnt leak, it was marking its territory). My cars are however, behind a gate behind the house and lit as well as on video. There are no tree's above the cars, and they are handwashed with warm water weekly.

Outside is ok, if the packs of roving kids are kept at bay....did I mention my Beretta?

If anyone wants to park their weekend car here, I have a hanger right off sunrise Hwy, its alarmed and dry. And I charge less then bridgehampton!

I have video cameras monitoring the parking lot. Maybe I should get some of those motion sensing guns like on the aston martin in "die another day". That would keep the rebels at bay. Although I live in a good neighborhood so it should be ok with the tent until I get a real structure. Thanks for all your help.

i have seen a north jersey resident (closter/harrington park) keep their personal ferrari (silver/black 360 modena, challenge grilles) outside, on a very busy street. i spotted it along the main drag pulling into its driveway; upon passing the house on later dates (in the fall, winter) it is kept in a dark gray tent (like you described) next to the driveway. thought it would be interesting to tell.

Depends where you live as to whether the car will be safe from bothersome hands if you leave it outside. You know your neighborhood better than we do. As far as covering it, get yourself a good NOAH cover, fitted to the car. California Car Covers or Wolf makes them. NOAH is water resistant and breathable, so will minimize risks of rust, mildew, etc. Plus, you can get a cable lock to keep the cover from walking away.

I'd say limit outdoors to three seasons (spring, summer, fall). Over the winter, if your garage is not up yet, rent a space in one of those rent-a-cubicle places, if you can't find a garage space for it. My $.02. I leave my Mondi outside when one of the other cars is in that space being worked on and it hasn't hurt it yet.

Build the garage, then buy the car. Who knows, by then you might be able to afford a way, way superior 355. The build quality on the 348 is shoddy at best and if it is pristine to start, it won't stay that way for long exposed to the elements. A while back, I considered buying a 348, but after driving a 355, I did not see the point.
