    Hi Everyone,
Today I noticed that the pulley attached to the camshaft that drives the air pump on our '83 Mondial QV doesn't turn. The camshaft turns, the engine runs, but the pulley and therefore the air pump, is not moving.

    HOW is this possible?

The pulley looks more complicated than the simple pulley on my 308. It has multiple pieces, almost looks like the clutch on the AC compressor, as if it is possible for one part to turn and not the other.

Is there some kind of slippage thing built in, in case the air pump seizes?

I cannot find a Mondial QV parts list .pdf anywhere. I have the 2 valve parts list, and the parts are different. I have the QV service manual, but there is nothing in there about this. I went to Ferrari UK and got the following image, but there is not enough detail to determine how the pulley is built. Can anyone shed some light on this? Is it just a loose set screw? How does this pulley attach to the end of the cam?

I just spent a fair amount of time replacing valves and hoses in the air injection system to keep the emissions clean, and now that it's together, I noticed that the air pumps hasn't been running!!! D'OH!!!

    Thanks!

    Birdman,
#71 the shear pin is broken. It is designed to break in case the air pump stops turning while the engine is running.

You can get the shear pin from T-Rutlands. 1-800-638-1444(i think?)
Part number from your local AC Delco delaer on the smog pump is 215-143. Brand new pump. Have to drill out the bottom threads IIRC, but that is it.

Thank you very kindly! So it seems that the pump is seized? I'll have to yank it outta there and check it out. Can these things be rebuilt, or is it better to replace? It seems like it ought to be a simple thing to rebuild.

I'll yank it out and give it a look.

Smog pumps are fickle. I would highly suggest buying a new one only, such as the delco I suggested. The cost of the shear pin will support getting the best as well.

You can just ignore it if your car doesn't get smogged by the Feds. I've heard a lot of people cut the belt in case it seizes and the shear pin doesn't shear.

BTW, IIRC the 83 has the pump, 84 and 5 QV's do not, so you need a 1983 parts guide.

I have the Mondial QV 1984 parts manual as a (16MB) PDF file. If you want me to send you a page or two I can.

...and the Mondial QV (316 page) workshop manual and the wiring diagram both as PDFs.

    Zertec,
You the man! You have a PM!

    All,
OK, the pump is totally seized, and I can't get it apart. So here's the question. The car has cats, and the rest of the emissions system intact. If I replace the pump, it will be fully operational. In fact, I just replaced all the one-way valves and hoses in the injection system. Judging by the nearly perfect way that the air pump belt holds it's shape, this thing has not been working for a long time. Will the lack of an air pump be bad for the cats? The car doesn't need to pass emissions (1983 is the first year in MA that doesn't have to pass! WOO HOO!) But, if it is somehow better for the car or the cats to have the air pump, I'll replace it. Especially if there is a cheap AC Delco version! (Thanks redhead!) If there is no harm in not having it other than slightly higher emissions, I might as well leave it off. It sure makes more space to work in the engine bay without it!

One friend has told me that I need it or the cats will cook themselves. Another friend told me to throw the damned thing in the trash. (Both are regular Fchatters with Ferraris so I repsect both opinions!)
