I've only driven about 100 miles so far with my new baby, but I have a question about a strange intermittant noise I hear. I only hear it about once or twice each ride. I only hear it when I'm stopped for a light and it only happens once in a while. It doesn't matter if I'm in Neutral or 1st gear, the noise doesn't change. The best I can describe it as, is a whirring, humming, grinding noise. when it happens, I feel a slight vibration in my seat. It's not very loud, and it lasts for a few seconds. I assume this is normal, I'm guessing that maybe it's the F1 pump building pressure. That's just a guess though. What do you guys think? does this sound like normal operation? If so, what is it? Sorry if this was covered before, I tried doing a search and couldn't find anything on it. Thanks in advance.

(whoops I just realized that this probably should have been posted on the technical Q&A)

Sounds like the F1 pump. I believe it keeps the pressure up in the F1 system.

You will not 'feel' the F1 pump priming at any given time, only hear it when you open the door before starting the car. After the car has been started you won't hear it as the motor is running.

On my F430 I can hear the F1 pump just fine with the engine running, top up or down as long as I am idling and standing still (low ambient noise situations). In my garage it quite audible and maybe even startling sometimes.

The 360 F1 Pump resident expert is [ Juri ].

The F1 pump should run periodically to keep F1 pressure. The frequency of the pump is in relation to the frequency of shifting and the wear in the system. But I hear mine about once a minute for 1-2 seconds while running. At first door open in the morning with no pressure it can run for 4-7 seconds.

If you want to verify its your F1 pump, just wire up a temporary test light to the pump where you can see it and go for a drive.

[ Juri's ] video on replacing the pump; will show you where it is and you can learn a bit about the system: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=338837&highlight=F1+Pump

If its not your F1 pump, I cant for think of anything else that could cause what you are describing.

The F1 pump is a weak link in the 360 as is its relay. Lots of threads on the subject and some options. But as I always say, if its not broken, dont fix it.

    *Note: I have a 430 not a 360.

Thank you all for the advice. I wish I could have described it better, but obviously it's hard to do with words. Even worse, I only hear it every so often, so it's hard to have someone hear it either. I actually forgot what it sounds like at this point. I definitely feel a slight vibration feeling in the seat when it comes on though. It almost sounds and feels like a bad throwout bearing when it makes the noise, but I doubt it is that. If it was, I would imagine that it would make the noise all the time. Also, with only 3,600 miles, I don't think it would be anything along the lines of a bearing. I will try and get some pattern on the noise, or maybe jump out and open the engine cover to see if I can locate the source. if it's easy, I may also try what Trent recommended with the test light. I like that idea, very smart!

I can clearly hear my F1 pump with the car's engine running, but only at a stop light... not at speed.

I think I know what you're hearing. I always hear this faint and kind of high pitch humming tone at idle and with foot down on the gas peddle. The noise drowns out as your engine and exhaust note take over at higher speed. It used to drive me crazy and I couldn't figure out what it was or where it was coming from. I finally asked the dealer and was told that i am hearing the noise of the fuel pumps. It makes sense because the noise always starts when I begin to pres down on the gas peddle. Try it and see if that's the same thing!

It's going to be near impossible to diagnose just from what your describing. The most common source of vibration I have found on 430s is a broken muffler bracket.

Another possiblity is the TX valve in the a/c system. Sometimes, when mine opens (equalizing the gas pressure in the system- so I'm told) I hear and feel a slight vibration/reverberation sound that lasts about 5-10 seconds. This i am told is normal? - it doesn;t happen often, but has been present for the past 3 years - and the a/c works fine.

That may be it!! I'm not sure, but I think it could be. I will try and narrow it down as I have more time with the car. I'm sure it's normal, but I am just curious.

I'm pretty its a 360, not a 430. In my 360, I get no such vibration. The F1 pump is at the rear of the passenger side of the car so I cannot imagine why you would feel it actuating. The timing belt however IS directly behind you and you definitely don't want that running irregularly. Luckily you have great mechanics near you that can sort this (and the other problems) out. Good luck.

Try driving with the a/c off for a while and see if the noise/virbation returns, if so - not the TX valve.
