My wife and I reside in Canada. My wife was born in USA and lived there till the age of 3. She has landed immigrant status here in Canada. Now through the events of September 11th we need to have a passport to fly into the US. Can someone still get dual citizenship since she has lived in both countries? Where does she go to get a passport Canada or the US? Anybody here familiar with this sort of thing? Thanks all.

    Mike.

Go to IRS.gov and find publication 519. It should answer all of your questions. Good luck!

I happen to work for a major air carrier and we have been told that as of the 23rd we are to deny boarding to anyone who does not have a passport regardless of country of origin or situation.
So y'all better get one real quick. There is no exception to the policy.

Seeing as she resides in Canada I'd just get one there providing her status allows.

BTW, Canada always recognizes their citizens as Canadians regardless of whether you become a foreign citizen but the US makes you renounce any foreign allegiance once you become a US citizen. So in effect she can get a dual citizenship as a Canadian citizen, born in the US.

Similar situation to yours at http://www.richw.org/dualcit/

Home Security passed a reg last year, effective soon, requiring that ALL people travelling form the US to even Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean must have a passport.

US Embassy in Canada should be able to help.

I have dual citizenship for the U.K and U.S.A, i was never asked to give up my U.K passport. My parents on the other hand were asked to give their U.K passport up, they did and then applied for a new one..Simple. It makes our regular trips between countries a lot easier.

I believe the US changed the citizenship laws a short while ago in regards to dual citizenship.
