I guess this applies mostly to Americans. The question I have is, how many of your local papers gave any type of mention to Schumacher's enormous pledge to the relief efforts in Asia? The reason I ask is because F1 goes largely unacknowledged here until something sensational happens, ie. deadly or near-fatal accidents. And then today Randy Moss bragged about how a $10,000 fine is nothing to him. He's right, given his $5M salary. But does he give to charity? I don't know--I'm asking. If not, he sure as hell shouldn't brag about how 10K means nothing to him, when a true sportsman like MS gives 10 mil. Mostly, it's always bothered me the way F1 doesn't get any press here unless somebody dies. To me, they don't have a right to cover the bad if they neglect the good.

    local papers???
How 'bout national tv, papers, radio, sports networks of any stripe?
Short of fiery death, F1 is not on the radar for the mainstream media in the US.
Nor does any racing outside Nascar, and the occsional IRL/Champ Car finishing lineup.
    Sports cars? mmh?
    Prototypes? uhhh?

Oh well, at least I can watch "live timing" on F1.com........and log onto grandprix.com etc. (and FChat).

Schumacher's donation was even mentioned by Howard Stern. When Stern said he never heard of Schumacher, there were plenty of listeners calling in to tell Howard that Schumacher is one of the world's highest paid atheletes, etc. and that his body guard was lost in the tragedy.

If I'm not mistaken, in the case of NFL players, league rules mandate certain
salary percentages be donated to charity. In their case, I believe it is the United Way. Teams also set players up with local charities so the short answer to this is yes. NFL players donate to charities if they like it or not.

Speaking of NFL players, someone suggested that Bush appoint Randy Moss ambassador to France.

Cant be any worse than Condi Rice being Secretary of State or Michael Powell
as head of the FCC. In this case, Moss may be over qualified.

My parents live about 20 miles south of Daytona, and I've noticed that because of the popularity of Nascar, most other forms of motor sports tend to get rather generous coverage in the area. I wish I had heard Stern's mention of it. Was he condescending because he had never heard of him, or was he respectful? The local TV news made small mention of it, but that was about it.

In eastern Canada he made nearly every daily newspaper for a day or two and even some weekly newspapers. He also made t.v. news/ sports shows and all major radio stations. This may be because Atlantic Canada gave so much coinage to the Canadian Red Cross, Oxfam etc... and all major companies are involved with the current "issue". The press has been on this since the start so a major donation like that made headlines. I gave a bill so far and I think that's enough, I'll save my money for a few months and give it to a local cause that will be neglected down the road since most people will be "donated out" after this one.

Well, not to turn it into a commentary on the donations, but I'm already cringing at the thought of all the stories of corruption that are sure to arise out of the relief efforts and money allocation. I mean, if people are cold enough to steal children out of hospitals, what will they do when they get a sniff of billions of dollars?
