I've been lucky to never have an F1 issue, but I've often wondered what I would do if my car was to have a problem and I needed to have it towed and could not get it into Neutral?

Aside from getting under the car to disconnect the actuator (which is not going to happen on the side of the road), is there any way to get the car into N?

If not, what do you do? Do you drag the car up on a flat bed in gear?

Yikes - I hope I never need to do this...

Yes Just drag it on the flat bed. That winch won't have an issue and I'm sure the tires will not flat spot for such a short pull ontonthe truck it would be fine.

But is there ever a issue where it won't go into neutral.

OK, so you drag it up the flatbed (don't love that) and then how do you get it off? I don't have a pole in my garage to connect a winch to :)

Just spray some wd 40 on the flatbed it will side right off. Thats how we got wrecked cars off flatbeds with locked up wheels

Gravity will get it off the same way they get wrecked cars off flat beds. Cable on the front and walk it off.

Hmmm.....if being in gear keeps the car from rolling on a hill, how will gravity get the car off a flatbed?

Pretty much that. Also, disconnecting your actuator mandates a calibration and purge that may not be needed otherwise, not the end of the world but just a consideration. When I had mine towed on the side of the road with an F1 issue it was pretty much a non event, he loaded tail first and once on the metal it slid easily.

Trust me it will come off like socal said.

Plus the hydraulics on the bed being able to tilt it and move it will get the car to slide off the flat bed. If you're in that situation it will be stressful but it will come off.

Also there's the wheel dollies some tow trucks use that would make it roll just fine. Especially when they are informed of the issue.

There are also these slick Teflons pad you can slide under the tire patches that allow the car to be slid. Have not seen them in action.

The "grease zerk" on the engine frame in the rear is supposedly a pressure point to the system. Pressurizing that will disengage the clutch. I have no idea what tool is required :) The owners manual has a section on it. I looked at the pictures once...

The few times I have had an issue, the car immediately drops to neutral. Selecting gears appears to be much harder than not ;)

Yeah and most flatbed drivers have a lubricant with them for this purpose. That and the bed is most likely covered in a beautiful patina of antifreeze and trans oil that makes is slide

You don't have room to carry 200 lbs around with you. Good tow truck drivers will have the right tools for the job. Dragging up the flatbed is perfectly fine too.

Here is a tool that I found in the workshop manual that supposedly is able to disengage the clutch in an emergency. I have heard its existence from another friend but have not seen one in person nor one in action.

I was going to ask Daniel at Ricambi is he has such a tool but never got around to do it, but it sounds like a "must have" in our tool box.

This demonstrates there are two type of men in the world , those that look at the situation and say golly gee willikers how on earth will i get that silly car on the truck , and the type that have balls between their legs and understand how to get their hands dirty and get the job done . I guess thats why at some point a pencil pusher behind a desk at ferrari
said golly gee willikers lets make the F1omatic

Any real Ferrari service facility or real Ferrari towing service will have that tool.

I am more than a little surprised this is so unknown. I have had one in my tool box for many years and our towing service had one on the truck.

If you are not using someone that is not properly equipped you have chosen badly.

Lol, I was just thinking the same thing when I read that. Like its a thing that everyone the world over would have accesss to. There is no Ferrari ANYTHING within 500-600 miles of me so it would be a pretty long wait for me on the side of the road. Any breakdown for me will probably be a couple hundred miles away from a place that would even have a truck capable of loading it. If I have to call for a tow truck it's most likely going to have someone operating it that has never seen a Ferrari let alone tried to load one.
That's why I always self rescue if anything of mine breaks down. I want it taken home so I can fix it anyway, not the nearest shop. Enclosed trailer sitting in my back yard with a winch and jacking wheel dollies, all the tools I would ever need. I just start going through my list of friends with pickups (everyone in Montana out of necessity) until I find one who's not doing anything and can grab my trailer and come get me.
The only time I haven't made it home with one of my Ferrari was when the clutch went out on the 348. I was 28 miles out and I just called my daughter to bring the pickup and a tow rope. Threw the tow hook in and she pulled me home. Ok I'm rambling now...
